Of course, they really COULD be doing this, and it was interpreted as a liturgical act with great symbolic significance.

I've seen photos of this, the flowers around the cross being watered in this manner when a bishop is serving. He blesses the four directions with the cross, bowing down VERY low, and many "Lord, have mercy"'s (something like 40 for each direction) are sung. I've never heard the explanation for this, though...

On the 3rd Sunday of the Great Lent (at least in the video) not. I've seen this ritual a couple time in the videos, as I can remember all of them were from Russia
