Walter, you are not incorrect, however I think a more robust definition for your usage would be (using your formula): 1) Compare A and B: Talk about the similarity and difference of A and B while emphasizing the similarity. 1) Compare A and B: Talk about the similarity and difference of A and B while emphasizing the difference. The joke here is that someone is taking that line literally and comparing and contrasting "thee" (the one person is in love with) with a summer's day. |

Walter this is where language gets hazy. Compare and contrast can mean exactly what compare does or for that matter what contrast does. Compare and contrast is often a "prompt" for students in school to compare and contrast two things (the joke above is playing off that connotation in American English, I can't speak to other variants of English). Rarely are you going to come across compare and contrast in day to day English. Just know that compare and contrast are often effectively synonyms which differ to whether the relation is more one of difference or similarity (of course you are going to find them listed as antonyms in most basic English references). You first formulation of comparing and contrasting compare and contrast works just fine; however, the usage is more nuanced. |

I still do not understand how these are related to the explanation of the difference of compare, contrast, compare and contrast. Can you explain a little bit more about it?
( By the way, Mandarin is not the first language of Hong Kong people. We do not use Mandarin to communicate with each other. We ususally speak Cantonese. We only know a little about Mandarin.)
