Last time the Patriarch was in America I spoke with him. To speak with someone is not news, it is just the polite thing to do.

Reading the article, His Grace's comments seem to be a bit uncharacteristic : "he noted that... few, if any, members of delegations from sister Orthodox Churches traveled to Damascus".  That may have been the case but why did he feel that had to be emphasised?  If he felt it relevant, by all means raise it privately to the Synod...  Also there could be perfectly reasonable explanations as to the lack of attendance e.g. the Bulgarian Church failed to send anyone because of "technical reasons" but we all know that it was politically motivated as the Syrian government refused to grant visas to the Bulgarian delegation.

Exactly. And I've read somewhere (I think it was a website of one of Antiochian diocese in South America) that official delegations were invited only to Lebanon. Even Orthodox Syrians couldn't farewell normally with their Patriarch - I mean, they were allowed to come to the cathedral only in the evening and at night to do it, because on the next day there was the burial.
