“Valaam, island of the monks”, is a documentary by François Lespes (French Documentary Director), about the Russian Orthodox monastery of Valaam, an island in Lake Ladoga, frozen in ice eight months a year.

The film is currently under production and will be aired for the first time on the french catholic TV (KTO) during the fall of 2012, and will be available with English subtitles.

François Lespes aims to familiarize the western audience with the treasure of Orthodox spirituality, in particular the Russian Orthodox Monasticism.

Another excellent video that is already out there on YouTube:

http://youtu.be/PX0SO8B6cZ8

It is called "Valaam: Step to the Skies"

It is in seven parts and is quite a good movie.
I would be happy to agree with you, but then both of us would be wrong.

25 min short documentary on Valaam for a wide audience.

Quote
On an island far from the mainland, the Valaam monastery is one of the Russian Orthodox Church's holiest and most isolated sites. Join James Brown as he meets the monks, mucks in with the volunteers, and encounters a special group of children in one of most spiritual places in the country. I haven't had a chance to see the other ones yet, but I started with the last one just now.

Very nice. And I'm glad that they left the bits in there that might ruffle some feathers, but are the genuine thoughts of the people.

Also, if they could make an entire CD of that girl singing that'd be just great :)

AFAIK, three. One in Finland, one in Russia and IIRC there's one in America too.
