Interestingly, Patriarch Alexius II died exactly 4 years ago.

Wow, Pope Shenouda, Abuna Paoulos, Patriarch Maxim and now Patriarch Ignatius IV! Where God closes one door, he opens another. I can not help but think that all of the shifting which is now taking place is somehow auspicious for the times we are in. Even the OCA has a new Metropolitan.
I wonder what is coming down the road which would require new commanders in the ranks.

I believe under the by-laws as set forth, there are 14 eligible candidates out of the 28 or so Bishops in the Patriarchate. Metropolitan Philip is the only one who is eligible for election from the Bishops in North America because he is the only one who has participated on the Synod in an official manner.
It should also be pointed out that Metropolitan Philip of New York is the senior most bishop on the Synod.

Metropolitan Ephriam of Tripoli was thought to be a possible candidate in the future, but he is not eligible as of yet.

Metropolitan Phillip is ailing.  His public schedule is quite restricted of late; recall that he didn't attend the ACOB meeting this year.  I think he has ceased attending sessions of the Holy Synod at this point.  No doubt he would not be able to fulfill Patriarchal responsibilities at this time.  I wonder if he'll even be able to attend His Beatitude's funeral and the Synod meeting, not-with-standing his desire to participate.  My guess, if these circumstances existed 5 years ago, he'd have lobbied hard for it, and I'd bet he'd have had a dynamic tenure if he'd been elected.  Based on the way the demotion of the AOCANA's bishops to auxiliaries situation manifested itself, the Synod was close to evenly split over supporting him; I don't know if anything has changed much since in this regard.

I think he would disagree with you. My guess is he would tell you being Patriarch is easier then being the Archbishop of North America.

Also, I believe you will see him present and participating.

No doubt he would not be able to fulfill Patriarchal responsibilities at this time.  I wonder if he'll even be able to attend His Beatitude's funeral and the Synod meeting, not-with-standing his desire to participate.

I think he would disagree with you. My guess is he would tell you being Patriarch is easier then being the Archbishop of North America.

Also, I believe you will see him present and participating.

Archbishop Joseph of Los Angeles is leading the AOCANA delegation to the funeral of His Beatitude.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9MiNjeXMI4 - last night in Damascus, patriarchal cathedral. That's so beautiful, singing Paschal hymns and candles... To not forget, that Christ is risen!
