http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-20581755Pope Benedict XVI has started a Twitter account. It is @pontifex. From the article: The first tweet from his account, whose name means both pontiff and builder of bridges, is expected on 12 December. No word on whether he will start tweeting pictures of cats, or even join OC.net.

I can already picture the big debates between Pope Benedict XVI and Isa right here on OC.net. It would be the most hilarious thing ever.

It seems like he got jealous from the Coptic Pope, who started this: http://www.copticworld.org/articles/1469/ I can see the tweets now: @PopeTawadros to @Pontifex: Just because St. Peter is chief doesn't mean you are. I'm Pope too you know...lol. Pray for me. @Pontifex to @PopeTawadros: LMPO!!! (laughing my pallium off!!!)

Somehow I think that the Pope's 'Tweets' will be handled by some low level Msgr. or even a 'hip' seminarian!

Well not only that (since most people won't have heard of Coptic World), but Pope Tawadros II is already on Twitter, so we're first in that, too.

Question is: will he now claim absolute and immediate jurisdiction over all other Twitter members?

Probably. No other Patriarch has claimed Twitter to be their jurisdiction. Can I tweet my sins and receive a tweebsolution?

What if the Pope defines a new dogma ex cathedra on twitter? That would be weird.

No worries. His Holiness recognizes Orthodox Twitter accounts. Episcopalians on the other hand might get mad when HH announces what he thinks of their accounts.

I think this is his first solo account. Previously, he has used an account for Vatican officials in general. I think that's what a story on CNN said.

Pope Benedict's first tweet from @pontifex came today reading: "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart." The Pope's tweet has already been retweeted close to 30,000 times. He then followed up with two more tweets that asked: 'How can we celebrate the Year of Faith better in our daily lives?'; and answering: 'By speaking with Jesus in prayer, listening to what he tells you in the Gospel and looking for him in those in need'. .... Vatican officials have acknowledged the pope won't actually type the messages and that someone in the Vatican's secretariat of state will write them on his behalf. But they have insisted that the words will be his alone, culled from his speeches, homilies or catechism lessons.

From Sunday, it has been revealed, he will also be tweeting in Latin. Within hours of the announcement, the Twitter username @pontifex_ln had nearly 2,000 followers. Countering the scepticism of those who suggest the universal Church's official language might not be an obvious tool for spontaneous exchange and debate, Manlio Simonetti, a professor in Christian history, told L'Osservatore Romano: "Latin … is very well suited to the brevity necessary on new social networks, even more so than English."

Actually I've heard of an OO priest who accepts confession and gives absolution via SMS, however not as a substitute for regular (monthly) confession.
