I keep hearing his name throughout the years and alot of my favorite media he has influenced it, usually by people misquoting him.
So what's the big deal about him?

Well, I looked him up on Wikipedia, and I guess that I have to honestly say that I knew absolutely nothing about him or any of his work. And, from what I have read, see really no reason to look into the matter any further. With my current backlog of reading that I need to do, I probably will not get into the 1700 - 1800 time period (particularly poetry) until about 100 years after I die. |

Plus he's quoted a lot in C.S. Lewis, and used by Gnostics to promote New Age ideas, so knowing a little about him might be wise.

While some of Blake's work is popular, most people who enjoy quoting him have little grasp of what made him so strange and unique. Most people are familiar with some of his wonderful lyrics from Songs of Innocence and of Experience but far fewer have even attempted to penetrate his longer "prophetic" works such as Milton or Jerusalem. He is often classed with the Romantics but, while the other Romantics (such as Wordsworth or Shelley) were generally very much aligned with the thought of the Enlightenment (despite all their wrestling with particular elements of Enlightenment thought) Blake seemed to completely reject the Enlightenment and virtually the whole Western philosophical tradition. He exalted inner vision and "Imagination" over discursive reason, and dismissed the empirical scientific attitude (personified as Newton) as the "vegetable existence". For me personally, reading Blake was instrumental in breaking free from materialistic thinking and I may have never become a Christian without him. Many of Blake's views seem wild and heretical but I think in some ways he was much closer to Orthodox thinking than other Christian contemporaries in England and the West.

I think we are having communication fail here. I have no issue with the thread. I am merely questioning why you would think that I would spend a lot of time looking up a person that I have never heard of. As to my original post, I was merely stating my ignorance of the subject. |

Sure I could have done a wikipedia on him (which I briefly have) but I wanted a take from the members here. You can look up any subject you want without asking questions and doing a google search, but that's not be point. Some folks here provide some interesting insights that a google won't reveal.
Thank Iconodule. Just looking at his thought haphazardly, he seems to reject alot of the pursuit of reason and turning more to the mysticism. It's not a surprise he was ignored during his time. His stature has been harder to ignore over the years because of his influence on a lot of things I enjoy. I'll dig deeper into his bio in a moment.
