Today in the Armenian Church is the feast day of St. Stephan, the first martyr and deacon. It is also the feast day for all the deacons. So happy feast day to all the deacons!

Just wondering if anyone knows why the Coptic Synaxarium has St. Stephan's Day two days after the Lord's Nativity whereas the Romans (and from what you have said the EOs too) have it one day after?
This seems like a minor difference but would like to know.
Also, which calendar do the Armenians use please?

In the New World, we're on the new calendar. I know in Jerusalem the Armenians are still on the old calendar. |

The rattling of the fans  reminded me of the Syriac DLs I atteded in Syria. Almost drowned out the organ.  My son was made an acolyte this past St. Stephan's day, I'll try to figure out how to post pictures. Is this the main Church in Etchmiadzin? It is strikng, in that I have been to the Patriarchal Cathedrals of several Patriarchates, EO and OO, and they all tend to be on the small side, which suprises people in the West, used to the Vatican and St. Paul's. |

It's by (Armenian Catholic) Subdeacon Lazarus Der-Ghazarian, a long-time on-line friend, whom some will know from his, regretably infrequent, posts both here and at ByzCath. Many years, Neil PS - I still don't see a clear answer to the question of whether the feast of St Stephen is served the 26th or 27th by the Armenians? The other OO and OC Churches all seem to serve it on the 27th, as do the EO and EC Churches, with the Latins and those Protestant churches which observe it - the Anglicans and Lutherans - doing so on the 26th. |

The Armenian calendar is different from most in that it doesn't have set dates for most feast days. There are complicated rules governing when things are celebrated. With the exception of six specific feast days, no feast days ever happen on Wednesday or Friday. Also, although Sunday can be a feast day, it can't be a saint's day. http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php/topic,16853.0.htmlI'm not sure of the specific rule about St. Stephan's Day except that it seems to fall on December 25, unless the 25th is a Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday. For example, although today is the 25th, St. Stephan's Day won't really be celebrated until tomorrow, the 26th, because today is a Sunday. In years when the 25th is a Wednesday, it is on Tuesday the 24th. In years when the 25th is a Friday, it is on Saturday the 26th. All other years it's always on the 25th. At least that is my experience. |
