John the Baptist only baptized people after they had confessed.
If you claim to have prayed for forgiveness at home, how do I know you really did it? If you go to the priest, he knows you prayed at least that once. The priest is there to help you, not punish you, and praying for forgiveness is a good thing. You don't want to be a victim of your own spiritual sloth and get into the habit of saying, "I'll pray later... I'll repent later..." Time tends to pile up, before you know it a lot of time has gone by, and what you thought were 'little' sins have turned into big problems, like a spiritual infection. Temptation gets harder to fight, not easier, unless you do something about it.
