I was curious to know if we had a large anime and manga following here.

My favourites:

1) Black Butler
2) Dragon Ball/Z/GT
3) Yu-Gi-Oh!
4) Ghost in the Shell
5) Neon Genesis Evangelion

I'll admit I used to be obsessed with anime/manga back in high school. Almost never watch or read any of it anymore though.

Anime:
Turn A Gundam
Aria
Toradora
Nodame Cantabile
Working!!
And anything Gundam in the UC universe.

Manga:
20th Century Boys
Angel Densetsu
Cross Game
Harukana Machi-e
MSG: Ecole due Ciel

Alright, so someone help me here... I'm interested in getting sort of into manga. I'd like something dark, adult-ish (but no smutty tentacle stuff please), maybe cyberpunky like Akira or supernatural. Reasonably cerebral. Decent art. Can anyone help me?

Uzumaki and Giyo by Junji Ito
Miyazaki's Nausicaa manga
Pluto by Naoki Urasawa
Ghost in the Shell

I hear Berserk is good if you don't mind gore, but I can't attest as to whether or not it ever gets rapey. I also hear that Tezuka did some interesting adult-oriented stuff-- Ayako, Alabaster, Message to Adolf, etc.

The manga I recommend is “Cory in the House.” The anime was good, but the manga involves an ambitious crossover with both Suite Life on Deck and Hannah Montana, where Cory ties her up to a ball and chain and then Kame Hame Ha’s her into the ocean, which is an important plot point to the Hanna Montana anime - the Wrecking Ball subplot.

I got the Uzumaki omnibus in the mail the other day. I'm about 1/4 into it. I know everyone says it's insane... but man, it is insane. I love it.

Lately, I've been reading The Quintessential Quintuplets manga. Otherwise, I haven't been following much.

I've been looking at going to one of the local cons down in Fargo. Hard to find an anime con, or any "nerd" oriented con (sci-fi, comic book, etc) that doesn't have a sizeable presence of adult/+18 material, even though it is almost always saved for the night time and not when I'd be attending. Atlanta's MomoCon is the only family friendly one I've found so far that is of any significant size.

It's also just hard to find conventions to go to when you live in North Dakota, but Fargo has a couple of nice ones for anime and sci-fi stuff.

So I am trying to do that good dad thing where you show an interest in what your kid is interested in, but my 14-year-old's taste in Anime and Manga eludes me to some degree.

Since I already read comics, I feel like reading an occasional Manga would be the easier option. What is a good one that an adult man could read but he could also recommend/pass on to an eighth grader?

Probably not best to ask someone who unironically enjoys cartoons what's something "an adult man could read" but I enjoyed the Nausicaa manga and what I've read of the Legend of Zelda mangas. This is also pretty fun.

I've put Nausicca in my wish list on Amazon (waiting for payday). I like Miyazaki's films (especially the lesser works, like Porco Rosso), so I hedged my bets that I would like the Manga for a film I already enjoyed.

Was looking to see if the original Ghost in the Shell was on Netflix (hadn't seen it since it came out)… it's not. Ghost in the Shell: Arise was there, though, which I guess is some kind of reboot. I watched the first part (Phantom Pain.) I enjoyed it but it was a bit confusing and possibly incoherent. I also didn't really see any point in the cutesy robot "bodyguard" other than an ill-conceived comic relief.

I used to love anime, not so much anymore. But I still want to watch movies from ghibli studio. The artwork is really beautiful, it gives me a nostalgic feeling for a place I've never been.
kiki's delivery service, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, whisper of the heart, Spirited Away etc.

I watched the first part (Phantom Pain.) I enjoyed it but it was a bit confusing and possibly incoherent. I also didn't really see any point in the cutesy robot "bodyguard" other than an ill-conceived comic relief.

None of the iterations of Ghost in the Shell line up with each other and often contradict the other. They should each be viewed as original takes on a concept in the same setting. The original Ghost in the Shell movie is always good, just avoid the 2.0 rerelease because they redid some of the graphics and it actually looks worse than the original, which was largely hand drawn. You should be able to find it on Amazon, although its dub only, which is okay, but not great.

The next major stop in terms of animation would be the Stand Alone Complex series from the early 2000s. It has 2 seasons. It's probably one of the best anime of all time. It poses a lot of questions in terms of sociology, philosophy, and politics to an extent that one movie simply cannot capture. It has great character development, even if a bit uneven, too. This version used to be on Netflix, but is no longer. They have a blu-ray set on Amazon, but I hear a lot about severe sound quality issues with the BluRay release. My general impression is that the DVD release is all around superior. The series is also on Steam, but I don't know the quality of this digital release. Might try reading some of the reviews there to get a feel.

Then there is Arise, which is the latest iteration to the series. It was originally released in 5 OVAs, but I don't think the 5th one ever got an American release. But then they repackaged it into 10 episodes, dividing each OVA into 2 episodes with additional content and a slightly altered order. In some respects, this rendition of the series is probably closest in its characterization of Major Motoko Kusanagi that is present in the original manga - ie fights with her boss, has romantic interests, etc. It is also closest to the manga, as I understand it (I've never read it), to having mass info dumps in technical jargon. Another distinguishing feature of this series is that it has prequel aspects, with much of it taking place before the formation of Section 9, whereas all other renditions of the series take place during Section 9. I would say that in terms of anime, this version of Ghost in the Shell is the weakest. Nonetheless, it is still worth watching, but I suggest watching last. Its correlating movie Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie is actually quite good as anime movies go, but you should only watch it after watching all of the OVAs or 10 eps.
