I dont know where to put this but I am watching Constantine and Im thinking, "should I be watching this?" What about movies like the Exorcist (which I LOVE). Should Christians be watching these things? Are they bad in-and-of-themselves?

Limiting myself to Constantine and Constantine only, in no way speaking of the spiritual effect movies with the demonic have: Yes, that movie is indeed bad in and of itself. By any perspective it is just a bad movie. No, you shouldn't be watching it, any more than you should be watching The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Read the Hellblazer late '80s to early '90s comic runs for your John Constantine fix. HEY! Don't diss the League! Oh, I wholeheartedly diss the League. Howard the Duck was a better comic book movie. *drops the mic and exits the stage* Peace! Is outrage! Anathema! Anathema I say! |

There are more and more people who call themselves "spiritual, but not religious." In earlier decades, these would do seances or go to mediums. "Paranormal phenomena" is spiritism for the spiritually challenged.
I just heard a great one liner from my dad the other day about this (my father is a priest): "the Devil is spiritual. not religious" (the context here being literal. the devil is a spirit being, incorporeal. he was doing a multiple play on words. we ask to be spiritual but we don't even know what the word literally means! we cannot be spiritual as we have flesh! and the devil himself is this mythical "spiritual" we all claim to be!, etc. etc. etc. good times). That sounds like a joke one would tell at seminary or perhaps to the bishop as an ice breaker, provided he's not the one with the power to defrock.  |
