The iconographer is Orthodox.

1. That in itself doesn't make the image an icon suitable for Orthodox veneration. Fr Stamatis Skliris is an Orthodox priest, yet his psychedelic and often blasphemous schlock can be found throughout this thread.

2. It's passable for an Orthodox iconographer to paint an icon of a pre-schism saint for a non-Orthodox patron. It's improper for him to paint an "icon" of someone who his own Church does not, and cannot, venerate as a saint.

1. I didn't say it did.

2.  We know.

There might be folks reading your post who could regard the religious affiliation of the painter of that image as giving legitimacy to the image from the Orthodox POV. I was setting the record straight.  :police:

Neither of those points has anything to do with what Fr Lance was responding to.
OC.NET is full of temptations, but in temptations we are enforced, remember about the thread "Temptation in the Desert: Rachel Weisz and the Undoing of Mor Ephrem". OC.NET helps in becoming unpassionate.

Orthodox iconographers have to make money in-between church fresco commissions.  Orthodox Americans love things cheap and fast, like our fast food, so let the Catholics commission as many hand-painted icons as possible.  It'll make this thread more fun.

I think it's schlock beacause of the misconception of the Holy Trinity icon theology:

Well, this one may be considered as a kind of art (probably?):

The rest... maybe they're just strange, no idea... If you a lot of icons ("icons") from one place like this one, it's easy to loose orientantion what's apriopriate and what's not regarding the icons ::)

Yeah, none of these are good. Looks like something in an art school freshmen's exhibition. Not well-painted, either. Some folks seem to think you don't actually need to know how to paint to do icons (this shows up in "canonical" icons as well).

So these were not meant to be icons, but nevertheless, they do have an abstract, patriotic meaning in them for Egypt mingled with Coptic symbolism, by Farid Fadel

This first one seems to allude to the suffering of Copts in Egypt mimicking La Pieta while bringing out Egyptian national pride:

This next one mingles ancient pharaonic, Coptic, and Islamic religions on a young woman with Nubian features, most probably implying Egyptian national unity:

Kind of surprised that Lucifer isn't blond haired and blue-eyed.

The same guy (TestingPoint) has an icon of Judas holding his own intestines.

As an ironic thing, I have to say I kind of dig it. It's like the reducio ad absurdum of pop Catholic kitsch.

Of course, as usual for the internet, I'm sure somebody is going to take it seriously (and already has). 4Chan has ruined culture.

Kind of looks photoshopped to me. The angle seems all weird and it looks like there's artifacting around the halo and the soldier's head. I'm far from an expert, though and a quick reverse search doesn't turn up any possible genuine version.

Not that I would be surprised if it really happened, of course.

If it was more clear that this is not being passed off as a real thing that happened, I'd agree. The line between satire and fake news is too blurry these days.

It makes a great political cartoon though.

If it was more clear that this is not being passed off as a real thing that happened, I'd agree. The line between satire and fake news is too blurry these days.
Especially with people like me running around who can't tell what's shopped and what isn't.   :o  :-[
Is any of the above Orthodox?  I have no idea, so there’s that.

Pray for me, a sinner.

I'm not all that good at it, either.
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.

But did the guy in the original icon have a suit on? Who was it?

You can see the distortions around the frame where the Russian flag has been put in, around the Rublev Trinity, around the suit, Putin's face and halo. It's all over.
