Not sure what's happening here:

Now available in blond:

Needing a hug on the cross:

Holy Family with teenage Christ:

The first one: a copy of a piece of sociopolitical schlock by Robert Lentz, which attempts to portray the Virgin and Child "in solidarity" with victims of the Jewish Holocaust of the Second World War. The Child is holding the scrolls of the Torah. Nice bit of Judaizing there.  Tongue

The second one: A blending of two historic icons, a 12th century Mandylion, and a similarly ancient icon of Christ with golden hair.

The third one: A nice sentiment, but it's at home with some forms of Roman Catholic piety, not Orthodox iconography.

The fourth one: Yet another version of the "Holy Family". OK if you're Roman Catholic, not OK if you're Orthodox.

Neither the icon posted by NicholasMyra, nor the al-Fayoum portraits are grotesque or unsettling to look at. The painting posted earlier is.

Says you and they look like they have all the "training" in their creation you go on about of a kindergartner.

This is not point out the weird MLP: FiMesque Coptic images I see here and around.

I might have guessed an ancient version of the bosu ball (with his use of a sword strongly implying crossfit), but then talking about Jesus exercising is really frowned upon around here.  angel

For those who are wondering, the Slavonic inscription is of Hebrews 4:12 :

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Did you see the thread about what brings me joy? He has a two-edge sword of the Lord he breaks out. I gotta find it.

Anyway, this is the sword of God withdrawn and extended:

At this part of the youtube video he gets on his knees for some reason to pray and ends the prayer by using the sword:

Ethiopian are worse. Not to mention Syriacs of different flavours that do not seem to have any traditional iconography at all.

Neocoptic are nice, however.

Neocoptic are nice, however.

I once brought this style up to a couple of Copts who were coming to an Orthodox Christian get-together. Before I got more than a few words out, they stopped me, and said something to the effect of, "yes, we know they're not right. There's only one artist in the world who does good Coptic icons, and he has to be flow around everywhere, so we have to resort to [painting the sort of icons I'd seen]."

I actually really like the Ethiopian icons

+1 They just represent Ethiopian culture, perspective and spirit. But I don't have any problems to recognize them as icons, which is very often not the case of e.g latins' pictures. Well, probably there is one type of Ethiopian icon, that I don't like: the Trinity. Just see it:

The only form of depiction of the Trinity is the Rublov's one.

I assume he meant the Grateful Dead. I've often thought how dull and lifeless their music is in comparison to their packaging.

No kidding. I saw the Dead swag way before I heard their music. I don't think I'd ever heard more "musicians" do less with more. There were 12 guys on a stage playing and it sounded like three dudes.

The Ethiopian icons look like they were done by someone tripped on LSD. Look at the colors! The Trinity icon feels especially spacey, because the Three Persons of the Godhead have an unclear expression.

Is that second Greek word (Internetakias) an actual word? Does anyone have an idea what that could mean?

Internekakias could be roughly translated as "prolific internet user" or "netgeek". It's very likely become part of present-day Greek slang.

LOL

ok we have

1) saint Nektarios

and

2) Konstantinos Mitsotakis former Prime Minister of Greece who is 95 years old (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konstantinos_Mitsotakis)
well known as deathless or the man who brings unlucky or just Dracumel Tongue

She was canonized on May 2, 1999 by the Russian Orthodox Church.  So, you don't need quotation marks.

Stalin didn't step foot in her room, though.

And here it is being venerated:

St Matrona of Moscow is indeed a glorified saint. No ifs, no buts. There is no need whatsoever for the quotation marks, Maria.

The icon being venerated was originally one of several panels showing scenes from St Matrona's life, surrounding a large central panel of her. It is not schlock.

It depicts a scene where Stalin visited her, but he rejected the advice she gave him. This is clearly expressed in Stalin's defiant posture and the way he is striding away from her. His presence in this panel cannot be construed as him being a saint, just as other malign figures are often seen in such panels of the life icons of other saints. Saints can be seen rebuking pagan kings, or standing before pagan judges. Who is the holy one in the panel is easy to spot.
