I know it's Lentz, but ran across this one today.

Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

Mormon triadology is weird. Three beings in one Godhead without being the same essence.

I like the title. Makes it sound like Omran's mother/wife is yelling upstairs telling him to get dress cause they have guests.

Also, just because they *look* like the Holy Trinity on a certain other icon, doesn't actually mean they *are* supposed to be the Holy Trinity in this painting.

IIRC, he's the only person officially canonized by the COE post-Reformation.

Have you seen Lentz's horned god "Christ"?

http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3235/1153/1600/lord%20of%20the%20dance.2.jpg

Here's what Lentz himself writes about it:

One of the most ancient masculine images of God in Europe is a benign antlered figure. This image predates Celtic civilization, but was embraced by the Celts for its beauty and truth. The Horned God was a protector of all animal life. He was especially linked with the masculine sexuality and spirituality. He was considered Lord of the Otherworld and guided souls to their destination after death. In Celtic art he is usually shown sitting cross-legged and wearing a torc -- the Celtic symbol of authority.

Christian missionaries tried to stamp out the image of the horned god when they came to northern lands. Monastic scribes re-told ancient legends with an increasingly sinister twist. In time, the Horned God was pictured in the popular imagination as a demonic figure who rode through the night skies in search of damned souls. There are still places in England, however, where Christian men don stag antlers and dance for ancient feasts.

In Celtic mythology, individuals like Merlin sometimes assume the personality of the Horned God. In this icon, the Horned God is connected with Christ. Christ sits before us in the posture of the Horned God, totally naked, but without shame. His confident nakedness emphasizes that what God has made is good. Behind him are ancient European petroglyphs of the Horned God. He bears the wounds of his crucifixion to signify that he has risen and has taken a more cosmic character than he had during his life in Palestine. He is beating a drum and inviting us to dance; reminiscent of a medieval English carol that describes him as the 'Lord of the Dance.'

Lentz has painted various blasphemies, but surely this one must be, in form, content and intent, the very worst of his works.

I would tend to agree. Some of his more conventional ones are interesting if not something I would have in my house, but there are those that are blasphemous in a rather squicky, sexualized way.

Likely it's a mural icon which has become damaged by surface water. Damp coming through the wall itself would tend to peel or fret the paint.

As with Lentz, not only are the subjects generally ridiculous but the style is just ugly.

What do you think happened to him?  One theory I've heard is that he died jumping from the plane, inadvertently landing in a frigid body of water in the wilderness below.  Another is that he lived out his life with his ill-gotten gains.  I believe there is some physical evidence to support the former conclusion.  I'm interested to hear your theories.  :)

Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

Yea, this is an interesting icon.  While it may be schlock by today's standards, it seems people took literally the description of his facial features.
Vain existence can never exist, for "unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127)

If the faith is unchanged and rock solid, then the gates of Hades never prevailed in the end.

Reports of dog-faced people were common.  They always existed somewhere else.
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

Once Christ has filled the Cross, it can never be empty again.
