WILLIAM HART McNICHOLS is "among the most famous creators of Christian iconic images in the world.”
-- TIME Magazine, May 12th, 2002
Famous, all right. For all the wrong reasons.
But it's increasingly as though Jesuits want me to dislike all of them. Aren't every one of these RC iconographers Jesuits?
No. McNichols' great mentor is Robert Lentz, a Franciscan. And the RCs I've come across who paint schlock are of a range of traditions within that church.
There are a very tiny number of RC and BC artists who not only paint good, canonical icons, but, more importantly, have the proper mindset. Indeed, one wonders when they reach a point where a line must be crossed: to remain RC/BC, or join the Orthodox Church. If one were to pursue iconography to the highest level, sooner or later, that line must be faced.
