Behold, the great staretz and martyr, Vladimir Ilyich!

Or not.

According to this blog, the cult of Lenin is especially prominent among certain priestless Old Believers. Who knew?

Quote from: The Life of Ivan Neronov
[Ecclesiastics] conspired against him because they hated his teaching for its zealous emphasis on proper Christian conduct: with great courage he denounced all whom he saw behaving in an ungodly fashion... [As such] he was deprived of his priestly rank, bound in iron chains, and broken down in jails.

The inscription Живее всех живых - Пролетарий всех стран соединяйтесь in the festoon below Lenin's face means Alive and kicking - Workers of all countries unite!

Metropolitan Joseph of Petrograd crushes the false patriarch Sergius.

Good ol' Rasputin.

The list of characters given the "treatment" is bad enough. The spiels that accompany the images are beyond comprehension.

My, you're being polite.

It's hard to pick a "favorite", but dishonorable mention has to go to the rendition of Johnny Cash in pseudo-monastic garb, black feathers (fallen angel?), and standing on broken prison bars in the manner of Christ standing on the gateposts of Hades in icons of the Resurrection.  :P :P :P >:(

LOL.
Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

God's a Mother Hen, y'all.

And then a bunch of icons from Fr. McNichols (at this website), but he has a newer website here.

"The Epiphany: Wisemen Bring Gifts to the Child

St. Francis and St. Aloysius bring people with AIDS to Our Lady of Guadalupe and El Santo Niño de Atocha"

"Thomas Anchanikal"

"The Passion of Matthew Shepherd

Dedicated To The Memory Of The
1,470 Gay and Lesbian Youth Who Commit Suicide In the U.S. Each Year
And To The Countless Others Who Are Injured Or Murdered"

"Holy Prophet Philip Berrigan of Jonah House"

No. McNichols' great mentor is Robert Lentz, a Franciscan. And the RCs I've come across who paint schlock are of a range of traditions within that church.

There are a very tiny number of RC and BC artists who not only paint good, canonical icons, but, more importantly, have the proper mindset. Indeed, one wonders when they reach a point where a line must be crossed: to remain RC/BC, or join the Orthodox Church. If one were to pursue iconography to the highest level, sooner or later, that line must be faced.

Not personally, but I know a traditional Anglican priest here whose iconographic forays led to him and his family converting. Sadly, he died a year or so ago.

Not just roast pork, but body builders, scantily clad women exposing back flesh and breasts galore, science fiction characters, sports, vices, conspiracy theory fuel, etc.

Blech! Absolutely disgusting! The "icon" of Lenin is terrible, especially when a persecutor of Christ's Church is rendered as though he were the Saviour. Why didn't the "iconographer" even care to give Lenin a regular halo. The Rasputin icon is just in bad taste as well, because it is known that Rasputin was a man of bad morals. Hopefully people will stop making this stuff.

According to the Trinity Stores website, he is OFM, Order of Friars Minor. They're Franciscans.
He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will have no end.

If they are an official religion....they clearly needed their own icon....*facepalm*

The first few I care nothing for but this one I rather like. While it obviously takes some cues from iconography, I don't think it does enough to be counted among the schlock.

With that last one, I'm of two minds. Is it really even trying to be an icon?
Quote from: The Life of Ivan Neronov
[Ecclesiastics] conspired against him because they hated his teaching for its zealous emphasis on proper Christian conduct: with great courage he denounced all whom he saw behaving in an ungodly fashion... [As such] he was deprived of his priestly rank, bound in iron chains, and broken down in jails.

I was Roman Catholic during the tenure of that Pope. I had no idea he killed an alligator. Let alone that the alligator was king of something.  :D
He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will have no end.

This color scheme is a bit weird.
