Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

Ah, from the hand of Betsy Porter, whose home parish is St Gregory's in SF, whose pastor painted the Tammy Faye schlock. She is also responsible for the holy mermaid with otter image I posted in an early page of this thread.

If Miss Porter had any real affinity for Orthodox imagery, she would not be painting schlock.

The picture posted is of an obviously pregnant woman admiring her belly. It says nothing about the incarnation of God. The icon type known as Of the Sign takes its name from Isaiah 7:14.

I would never have guessed that she was "admiring her belly".

I think it was trying to do the more spacious than the heavens idea with the swirling stars and night sky on her belly.

I thought it was a little iffy  laugh

just in case its not clear....since the word used is slangy even in English...

Schlock is an English word of Yiddish origin meaning "something cheap, shoddy, or inferior (perhaps from German Schlag, Yiddish shlak, meaning 'a stroke'; also possibly from German "Schlag"/"Schlagsahne", whipped cream)"
In the field of science, "schlock" refers to shoddy methods or unreliable results. In art, "schlock" is sometimes used as a synonym for kitsch.

so none of the icons featured in this thread are 'appropriate'

DD, thanks for the linguistic analysis. I've long known schlock to be a Yiddish word, but not of its etymological details.  Smiley

This thread was started (not by me) as a result of my frequent use of the word schlock to describe the sorts of images which now populate this thread. For years, I've been referring to my growing archive of such images as "the schlock file".  So the term has kinda stuck around here.  Grin

fresh from greek politics

normal icon ->http://pravicon.com/image-22002

Any context?  I know nothing of Greek politics.

usually SYRIZA (leftish) politicians speak about the split of church-country (sorry for my english can't describe it better) and they want women to Holy Mountain. The leader of SYRIZA is atheist but recently meet with EP and said that we wants to visit Athos
http://www.dogma.gr/default.php?pname=Article&art_id=4952&catid=9

now Rena Dourou from SYRIZA said that SYRIZA will not split unilaterally the church-country if they won the elections and that they will supprt the Holy Mountain
http://www.agioritikovima.gr/arthra/40994-rena-dourou-to

It's very funny for Greeks but SYRIZA wants to win the elections so they try to take votes from church-people (but as they do this they lost votes from atheists who supports them all these years)

to be honest everybody laugh in Greece with this turn

The shameful and disrespectful appropriation of the Mother of God of Chenstokhov (known also as the Black Madonna, and as emblematic of Polish RC devotion to the Mother of God as the Vladimirskaya is to Russians) for sociopolitical cause.

Of particular note amid this horrid conflation of faith and nationalism is what is hanging around the "virgin's" neck. So her "immaculate heart" is the national crest, is it? If RCs aren't outraged at this travesty, they should be.

A travesty?  Compared to some other things I've seen here, no, not unless that word, having been stripped of its power, has become merely a synonym for "I don't like it".  It's certainly misguided.

Not only is it an appropriation of a venerable icon, beloved of RCs and Orthodox alike, to the "service" of a sociopolitical cause, it also is disrespectful of those who died in the attacks (and their loved ones) who were/are not Christian. By all means, commemorate those who lost their lives, it is not just proper, but necessary. It is not proper, let alone necessary, to subvert and distort what is holy for such causes, even "good" ones.

Further to this:

Is the Mother of God the embodiment of the American nation? Because that is exactly what this image is saying, with the words in the halo and the crest pendant.

According to this page, it is a memorial to Polish victims of 9-11 at a Polish RC parish in Manhattan: despite the caption which seeks to "universalise" its intent, I think it's clear who it was intended for.

I agree that the "political" elements are inappropriate and are a misguided attempt at making it "more American".  Even if not in this exact way, a lot of modern RC art is misguided and kitschy.  But I will not call this a travesty.  Maybe it's the New Yorker in me...you had to be there.

And in all the protest about the misappropriation of a venerable icon for a sociopolitical cause, I note with bemusement that you mentioned the "Immaculate Heart's" replacement with the national crest (even though the Immaculate Heart is not depicted in the original icon), while neglecting to point out the absence of Baby Jesus.  Tongue
