Does "Tradition" mean fidelity to magisterium or to ecclesiastical history? Are we to believe historical outcomes of theological discussion and historical incidents even though they are not officially declared as doctrines?

I'm putting this into Orthodox-Catholic discussions so that our RC members can participate. I'm interested in both Orthodox and Catholic perspectives.
