Hope it's ok to post this; I'm thinking it is but if it is not, please remove. There's been buzz in the local Orthodox community where I live about the first-ever Western Rite ROCOR parish in our fair state of Georia starting up soon. It seems there's plenty of folks excited by the idea and/or who thought it seemed newsworthy, so I thought I would post about it here for anyone who may find it of interest. And yes, in full disclosure, this is the parish into which I will be chrismated in just a couple weeks, LOL. I'm not posting in ANY kind of "official" capacity, lowly catechumen that I am, nor did anyone ask me to...it just seemed to me that there's been a lotta interest, just in my day-to-day wanderings and discussions, and thought folks hanging out in the WR forum might find it to be of interest. www.SNMOC.orgWe are a parish “in-formation” of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia forming in the Woodstock, Georgia area. We are a “Western Rite” parish; which means that if you are visiting from a Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Anglican, or another Christian background, then you’ll find something that you’ll be familiar with. The fact that we are a Russian Orthodox Church doesn’t mean that you have to be of Russian descent or speak Russian. Our worship is in English and we have people from all walks of life who come together and worship in the way that the ancient undivided Church has worshiped to this modern day.
Again, hope I haven't crossed any lines, offended or gotten myself into trouble... i just think it's cool that this will be the first and I just KNOW there's folks out there who would find it equally intriguing... Much love.

Glory to God! Please let me know when you've nailed down a location. I carpool with several folks up here in Rome, and we usually attend St. Mary of Egypt (OCA) in Norcross (though we make the occasional stop to see St. Elizabeth's, ACROD, in Woodstock, as they're doing mission work with us in Rome). I'll let them know your first Sunday is the 18th, and we may very well show up.

Wish you guys could have done this a few years ago while my brother's family and I lived in Canton. We'd have probably stuck with our GOA parish, but I've always wanted to attend a WR service to see what it was like.

But will your parish follow russian standards (singing-chants, liturgy, traditions and customs) or will it be an all-english thing?

Language-wise, all English, not a one of us are even remotely russian, but yes there WILL be chanting and everything. I believe we'll be using the Liturgy of St. Gregory, but DON'T quote me on that because I could be wrong and don't want to misrepresent lol. I'll double-check on that and get back to you on for sure. We haven't had a service yet so I can't tell ya what it's gonna be like lol.

...and here we are! This is us, with our newly-received, very old icon of St. Nicholas of Myra, at lunch yesterday following Fr. Benedict's ordination (we were all Chrismated/baptized on Friday). So.. here you have.. the birth of a parish. Awesomely exciting in so many ways! What a blessing.

We finally, officially have a temporary location in which to meet! (ah yes, nothing like those 11th hour victories, LOL!) For the time being we will be meeting in a chapel here: "ACWORTH CHURCH OF GOD OF PROPHECY at 3891 Nance Road Acworth, Georgia in the small chapel. We will have access at around 2 to 2:30pm. Chapel is being used as a youth church before our use." (copied from our Facebook page) Tomorrow is our first service ever.. and I am SO excited and looking forward to it. Blessings to all!

I am VERY excited...feel like a kid waiting for christmas, LOL. regarding fasting and our very late liturgy, here is what Fr. Benedict said on our FB page: For those of you regarding the question of eating before the Eucharist... One is traditionally supposed to not ingest food from Sunset on Saturday until after the Eucharist is taken. Since our Liturgy will be late in the day, let us apply a principle of grace regarding the needs of the body with the need to be faithful. If you need to eat on Sunday morning, do so with restraint and prayerfully. Some have dietary needs due to diabetes or other issues. If you are able to fast until afternoon, then by all means do so but not at the detriment of health or family.. http://www.facebook.com/groups/339686626124050/

I think you've lost Catherine to the Thanksgiving holiday, but I'll comment!
It was a pleasure to visit this new WR mission, meet Fr. Benedict (along with Catherine and other newly-minted Orthodox) and celebrate the Liturgy with them! They seem very excited about being connected to the Holy Orthodox Church, and served the Liturgy with all due reverence. They served a chanter's Mass (using the Liturgy of St. Gregory), as they haven't gotten down all of the music yet, but it was done very beautifully. I'm glad that Catherine showed up here, and I was able to learn they're only about an hour from me! It was an honor for me to visit them during their first Liturgy, and I look forward to visiting them in the future.
