I know that by posting on a thread it is automatically set to show replies to that thread after the post is made.  How do I stop following a thread?  Thanks!

There are a couple of ways.

The easiest?

Go to that thread and click the notify button at the bottom right again.

Let me know if that works for you.

If you find yourself with dozens of old threads which you have notifications for from five years ago and you get tired of getting pop-ups every time Severian works his magic, do the following:

Profile -> Modify Profile -> Notifications and Email ->Current Topic Notifications

The italicized terms are what you click.
