So, everyone who has read some of the Church fathers has one, a favorite. Someone whose sermons speak to the heart, whose dogmatic writings are very claryifing, etc. So, who's your favorite Church father?
I'll start: mine is St. Gregory of Nyssa. He can be very funny, has great humility (just read de anima et resurrectione) and his allegorical exegesis always teaches you a lot and he dares to make some controversial statements at times. Plus him always being in the shadow of St. Basil and St. Gregory the Theologian earns him some sympathy as an underdog.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem. Nowhere near as profilic as Ss. John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, any of the Gregories, etc. - all we have in terms of significant writings are his Catechetical Lectures - but I find I can nonetheless turn to him for an answer on pretty much everything.

Oh, this is a hard one! Of the Three Holy Hierarchs, I have to pick St. Gregory, and he's probably my favorite out of the Cappadocian Fathers, too. When it comes to monastic literature, though, I think I have to say St. Ephriam the Syrian. I absolutely love his Spiritual Psalter. Also, St. John Cassian, whose Institutes dwarf the "Institutes" written by another certain "John" several centuries later.  |
