How do you define life? and death? Physical and spiritual.

When the body dies, it is not annihilated. Rather, it's constituent parts are broken down, digested and dispersed throughout creation.

In the Fathers there is the idea of the dispersed nous. Am I right to see an analogy?

Is life something like wholeness and unity, while death is partedness and division?

When you get drunk, does the alcohol scatter your nous, or is your nous some invisible entity that is not part of the body?

Should I give you the answer you want, or what I actually think?

I don't have this topic all sorted out, JLatimer. I'm as curious as you are.

Okay then.

My best answer to your question would be to say first of all that I don't think the nous as invisible/incorporeal excludes it being affected by the body (e.g., dispersed by drunkenness), or affecting the body (e.g., physical sickness as a symptom of spiritual sickness).

I guess I would say, yes; the nous is scattered when I get wasted.

But I wouldn't describe it as part of the body. I would probably describe it as part of my nephesh or 'soul', of which my body is also a part.

How would you describe it?

sorry JLatimer, i do not know if it even come close to answer these existential questions, but Vivaldi's  vedro con mio diletto, makes me think of a soul longing for union with her creator, and the separation is unbearable suffering so every day she lives in exile, she lives pining for her beloved and longs for that joyful day she will see him again. so it resonates with st paul's beautiful  ' for me to live is Christ , and to die is gain!' speech.

well I thought  at least for our definition of life , its better than Carl orff's beautiful O Fortuna though I relate to his version of this Life  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWiyKgeGWx0&feature=related   this beautiful concert almost takes away the dark side of this beautiful brutaly honest work ..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD3VsesSBsw

life and death can be here on earth... living is being extactic, participating to life, being active in life's purposes and activities, experiencing the moments of life (joys, sorrows, love, etc). You can experience death while on earth by being inactive in life.To live life you have to care about life.life ends with death, physical death.what comes after that is beyond us.no one knows.death is part of life.

"Life is blessedness" --St. Barsanuphius of Optina, IIRC, a riff on St. Ambrose of Optina's "Monasticism is blessedness." The latest Optina elder is, of course, entitled to say, "Monasticism is life," and the circle will be complete.

The purpose of life is deification. Life is deification. Death to a person being deified is not truly death but just being planted until the Resurrection. True death is when someone is not being deified; like me. Don't be like me. You don't want to be enslaved to your passions.
