It was semi-serious. What's wrong with my statement, though? Icons don't really have a prominent place in the christian west. Awesome!

No, icons are western. Well, no. Not really. Perhaps it was extensively used in Italy for the 6th-10th century but that was because Italy was heavily influenced by the Byzantine Empire at the time. |

Icons are deeply entrenched in the Western Church culture from the most ancient times, and not just as a "borrowing" from the East. But even if they WERE due to a "borrowing," the borrowing is a done deal, and they are still warp and woof of the Western Rite. The extensive use of iconography in the Anglo-Saxon church is well documented by St. Bede and others. The iconostasis began in the West. Etc. And during those years, all the way up to the Schism, sculpture was rather rare in both East and West, whereas flat iconography was commonplace.

I had no idea he was interested in the Western rite. Was he always so, even in seminary? |
