Christians from Russia's Orthodox community are demanding that the country's Apple division remove the famous half-bitten apple logo from its products and replace it with a cross, because they find the apple image offensive to their beliefs.

It comes very close to blasphemy to put the cross on something as bad as a mac, or on anything that apple produces for that matter.

I thought the whole Christian-branded niche market thing was the intellectual property of western Evangelicals, not Eastern Orthodox Christians? Go figure. But then what I do know...I use a Compaq...come to think of it, the "Q" logo on my computer tower does look a little bit like a man making a metania, if I squint really hard and am as stupid as these people...  Undecided

This is just stupid, and unfortunately very typical of the ROC under Patriarch Kiril. I have a feeling that our Lord is shaking his head over this and the punk band episode.

This isn't the ROC, this is a group of crazies.

And I don't know what the Lord is doing about the punk band but the Russian immigrants I know think they got off too easy. Not that this thread is about that, but still.

I was not even aware that an apple with one bite represented anything but that someone was hungry and took a bite.

In one of my bible classes, a Greek Orthodox Priest said that it could have been a pomegranate, but some Catholic priests take the cake with their comment: It was not the apple that caused the Fall, but the pear on the ground.

Maybe Apple could modify their logo in Russia to a Pear. Isn't there an apple-pear?

Sounds more like the Onion Dome or an April's Fool Joke.

Just checked my calendar ... it is almost Saturday, Oct. 6.

Who would have thought that taking a single bite in an Apple would have caused all this stir.

Gospel According to Kerdy (Words of Kerd in Red):

"And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, 'I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 'Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.' Jesus answered him, 'It is written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’ Just Holy Russia will suffice."

Pomegranate would explain why there was only one bite.

Fig Newtons are devilishly delightful though.

It was in jest, not dishonesty.

It doesn't really matter what your ethnicity is. My point is clear.

The secular government is not in place to force Christian morality on non-Christians, or to serve as a vehicle for the Church to do so. Our Lord would have saved a lot of time if this were the case, calling down those legions of angels he referred to.

I'm beginning to think someone around here has a sort of personal problem with the Russian Orthodox Church.

I don't have a problem with the Orthodox Church in general, but I do have a problem with people within the Church who are in positions of authority that behave in an unforgiving manner. This goes against the example of our Lord who forgave those who persecuted him. Also, contrast the behavior of the current ROC administration, and their reaction to the protest by the punk band, with the late Patriarch Pavle of Serbia who forgave the Muslim man who beat him so badly, he nearly died.  Now that was the behavior of a real Orthodox Christian leader.  As for the Apple logo controversy, I would be surprised if His Holiness Patriarch Kiril and his cronies were not behind it.

Read the article referenced in the original post by Michal Kalina. It is obvious that the Russian Parliament is trying to pass this blasphemy law, which might affect the Apple logo, to thank the ROC for its support of Putin. The punk band is mentioned in the 6th paragraph.

I am confused why few complain about this in Muslim nations.  In fact, we are told its their business and we should stay out of it.  How is this any different?

I'm beginning to think someone around here has a sort of personal problem with the Russian Orthodox Church.

I have personal problems with idiots.

Read more about this - I think that Michal is not anti-Russian Church, but simply he is trying to point out that the actions here are NOT actions of the Russian Church - but certain extreme elements within the Church or at its periphery. (Come on, we have the same sort here and we recoil when the media portrays them as speaking for all of us.)

Here is the entire Interfax article from the 5th (I have bolded the relevant parts for clarity sake and reposted the entire brief article in order to clarify what should be a non-issue.) :  Moscow, October 5, Interfax - "Some believers in Russia have replaced the logo on devices manufactured by the company Apple purchased by them for religious reasons, (My Note: Sort of like the American idiots who saw the sign of the devil in the old Proctor and Gamble logo or that of Starbucks Coffee)  but at the same time have no intention of giving them up.

Interfax-Religion has learned that some Orthodox believers, including priests, have replaced the apple logo with images of crosses.( My note: America has lots of ignorant pious folks too...not just Orthodox i might add....)   They believe that an apple symbolizes the original sin described in the Bible and anti-Christianity, whereas the cross in Christianity symbolizes the Savior's victory over death and the redemption of the original sin.

The first Apple logo featured Isaac Newton sitting under a tree with an apple on it. An advertising agency later developed a different logo for the company: a bitten apple. There are many opinions as to why this logo was chosen, but no official version exists.

In the meantime, a political party called Yabloko (which translates as "apple") has been operating in Russia for some 20 years. It has recently issued a sharp statement against the creation in Russia of a "clerical-police state" with an ideology "represented by a volatile mixture of militant clericalism and obscurantism." The authorities of this policy are deliberately fuelling a conflict between the Russian Orthodox Church and secular civil society," Yabloko said. "

Now, the Christian Post is not an unbiased source and has its own issues with us and the Catholic Church so I would not put any credence in their 'reporting' or exaggeration of this non-issue. If certain folks in Russia want to play the fool, and not the Holy Fool, that is their problem. I don't see the Church in support of such nonsense. If ultra-nationalist Russian zenophobic  politicians want to play this card, that is their problem. We have enough idiots of our own on this side of the Atlantic in our own legislatures!

As for the Apple logo controversy, I would be surprised if Kiril and his cronies were not behind it.

What are you talking about? This makes no sense. And what does it have to do with the Apple logo?

Read the article referenced in the original post by Michal Kalina. It is obvious that the Russian Parliament is trying to pass this blasphemy law, which might affect the Apple logo, to thank the ROC for its support of Putin. The punk band is mentioned in the 6th paragraph.

I read the article and it says nothing of the sort. It says *some believers* want this, not "the Russian Orthodox Church". These are called Weasel Words and should not be found in serious journalism.

Besides, the Christian Post is an evangelical website that probably is not a reliable source about the scary Catholic-like religion of the "former Soviet Union" anyway.
