Hi ya'll.

I've scheduled time to upgrade the board on January 1st, 2005.  I have rewritten the majority of it from the ground-up, resulting in a faster, more streamlined board engine, while improving [and adding] significant features.  In other words, it's going to look rather different but function the same, if not better.

The people on the board who graciously took the time to test it have had nothing but great reviews so far, so I am assured you will all enjoy it as well.  It is definitely going to have a more next generation look and feel to it.  I have also equipped it to handle under load a bit better.

However, since this is your community just as much as it is ours, I would be appreciative if you could offer any comments in this thread about features or elements on this board that should be either added, modified, or eliminated.  Are there any interface issues?

I am interested in keeping this the most populous, and in my opinion best, Orthodox forum on the Internet.  I need your input.  A lot of folks lurk here or visit from time to time but offer no input.  It would be nice if you could voice your opinions.

If at all possible, it would be nice if when anyone posts anything critical of my posts that either:

1) the offending posters computer reboots continuously for a period not to exceed 15 hours

or;

2) the offending post is changed to say "Hmmm. Very thoughtful post, TomS. At first I disagreed with you, but upon further reflection, I see the wisdom in your words."

Thanks for your support!

P.S. Then again, you could always just change my post to read "Hi I am TomS and sometimes I am a dumbass."

Hey now Rob, no cussing, don't make me warn you!  Seriously, you showed me before the upgrade (tho I didn't test it) and it looks great, just going to take some getting used to, ie the new look.  But I think it will work great.  Some of the new features that are present under the members name when they post, I dunno, they seem kinda busy.  (I forget what that thermometer thing was used to gauge.)  But that's just my opinion.

After my initial trepidation, the new, new board looks great!

It is obviously a Labor of Love...

You go, CodeMaster!

Tom, don't make us install that thing where we change all of your posts.  See now I've yelled at both of you, so quit the swearing and personal attacks.  (Yea I think I'm overstepping my bounds, only what my 3rd day as a permanent mod?)

Look Tom, I think you're a cool guy in person, but when you come on this board you have a tendency to act like a child.  People have told you this countless times so it will probably bounce off your head, but I solicited an honest question and I got a joke answer.

When you dedicate hours of labor to something and receive answers like the one you posted you might expect a little anger.

this is minor, but is there any way to put an additional link to "show unread posts since last visit" at the bottom of every page as well as at the top? i find myself having to scroll up as soon as i finish reading every thread to get to the link again, and it's makin me dizzy Smiley

Just a reflection on the new presentation. When looking at the bar above, i.e. 'home' 'help' 'search', etc., might the smaller size and lack of contrast present difficulties for those with low vision? Similarly the forum listings? Yes, it's pretty but is it accessible being the question?

Anyone who is sight impaired got a view?

I don't recall anyone saying it's difficult to read. You can increase the size of the text in your browser if the text is too small (in IE, view->textsize)
All of the administrators and global moderator (not sure about John) wear some sort of vision correction and we can alll see/read it fine. In addition, no one else has said anything either. But if they want the buttons bigger, I suppose that can be done. What do you say?

I probably ought to get my eyes checked soon Tongue. When reading books I now have to hold them the same distance from my eyes as the computer screen normally is. With modern browsers font size really should not be a problem as I think most have an option to scale up not only the text but images as well. Opera does this very well IMO.

well, when you change the text size, the size of the text in the buttons doesn's increase, only the size of the other text on the screen

p.s. not that i have a problem with the size of the text Smiley

i thought that using the "back" button on forums like this undoes the action you have done as well, like if i am working my way thru "posts since my last visit" and im reading a thread, and then press "back" to get back to the "posts since my list visit" page, wouldnt the thread i just read still be on the list?

and FYI, at some point i did say something about the fonts being too small, but Anastasios gave me the tip of increasing the font size on my browser...so gphadraig is not the only one to have said anything Smiley

actually, that sorta works...first i click one of those to get back to the top of the page, then i click "list posts since last visit" and continue my browsing Smiley 2 clicks instead of one, but that's better than getting dizzy from scrolling back up every time - thanx for that tip, Kim!

I miss the old profiles! It was possible to format the text, and the greatest thing was that the column was wide enough so that a large amount of text was easy to read. Also, manual line-breaks don't seem to work anymore! Look at my profile and you'll understand what I mean. I could write my profile breafer and just refer to my homepage for more about me, but then I wouldn't get to create a distinct image of myself for OC.net users

I am currently away from home, so I cannot address this issue at the moment.

However, I will look into fiixing the problems you describe, by adding formatting and fixing the space.

Donna,

I swear that I posted this in the wee hours of the night before falling asleep, but it isn't here Huh - so, ...

The absence of a link at the bottom of the screen page to accomplish what you're asking seems, for some inexplicable reason, to be a common aspect of architecture to all on-line message boards, regardless of the system on which they are built. Not sure why that is, other than to aggravate folks like you and myself, who object to having to scroll through what we already bothered to read - "been there, done that, why revisit?"

Your "back" button doesn't undo what you've done (unless you are in the process of drafting a reply to a post and so unwise as to use it before posting the reply Shocked). In all other instances, what it does is to return you to a place in time, with respect to the forum's use, that presages that in which you were before its (the button's) use; if you can't get your head around the place/time/use premise (sounds like an obscure philosophical concept from metaphysics), not to worry - it sounded so convoluted that I couldn't stop myself from typing it Wink.

Instead, hit your "back" button, then hit "refresh" in the drop-down "view" menu. It will cause the screen's contents to be refreshed to a current state of information Afro. I find the extra keystroke needed to do so is infinitely less aggravating than scrolling back to the top of the page.

That was a long way to go to get to a 1 sentence of useful advice, wasn't it :-? Think I'll have coffee now - that's the problem, brain cells lulled by turkey and, as yet, unstimulated.

Many years,

Neil

Thank you for the tip, Neil Smiley I have solved the problem by using the "go up" button, where i click that once and then click on my link to "posts since last visit"...i had never noticed the "go up" and "go down" buttons, and they are turning out to be very helpful Smiley your explanation of how the back button effects fora such as this oneis quite accurate, in my opinion (i didn't find it convoluted at all), and i will remember your tip about the refresh button as well Smiley thanx, and hope you had a Merry Christmas!
