Did you enter any body building contests and/or strong man competitions while you were away from the forum?

Ha... I am neither bodybuilder-like nor strongman-like. ;D I haven't even had a gym membership since this past summer, and I've just been working out at home.

Fitness model and reality TV star George Gregory “Greg” Plitt Jr. was struck and killed by a Metrolink train just north of the station in Burbank on Saturday afternoon, authorities said...

Plitt was walking on the tracks in an area where pedestrians are not allowed to cross, near Front Street in downtown Burbank, when he was struck by Metrolink Train 268, which was heading south from Lancaster on the Antelope Valley Line. So you're wanting to charm it?

Is he wearing only body paint?

Completely apart from bodybuilding, I love the idea for the front of this site. An 'enter' screen that is actually cool, who could have predicted? Ok, ok, you probably don't like big beasts like that... well imagine it's something else; what if it was a bunch of monks on Athos walking in a procession? I just like the idea in general.

I picked up a couple of 5lb weights my wife uses in her exercise routine and carried them to the other side of the room. I was pretty worn out after all that, but I'm pretty proud of my accomplishment.  For you Europeans, that is about 2 1/4 kilograms, so yeah...

I see now that the site I linked to is different (and 78% less cool) when viewing with a mobile device--or at least mine, anyway.

But I am proud of your accomplishment with the weights Broseph. Inch up from there! Pretty soon you'll be lifting more than anyone else on your block. You'll get invited to all the parties, get modeling offers, be given gifts for no reason in particular--it's the best, truly!

Any advice on how to maintain a reasonable weight lifting routine during the Lenten Fast?  I've been losing muscle mass due to it and while my priest sees little wrong with protein shakes (I use whey), I certainly can't live on them.

The Labels That Actually Tell You If Food Is Healthy

One of the most balanced articles I've read in the last few years.

The only thing I remember disagreeing with--(I read this while out and am posting a link now that I'm home)--was the casual recommendation of checking (for example) macronutrient numbers on labels. I think those numbers get way too much hype--I say that partly because people rarely do things (even if measuring) in such a way as to line up with the numbers anyway; but more importantly because, as lab experiments have shown, the numbers they put on the labels can often (without intending to lie) diverge from what you get in the food, and sometimes to a substantial degree. So let's say you want to keep track of calories, and spent half an hour of your day weighing, measuring, counting, checking online for the calories in this and that, etc., and figured out exactly when you hit your goal of 1900 calories. Great! And let's even suppose you measure everything so that what you take in matches almost perfectly with the serving sizes and such you are using for your data (very rare, but possible). Great! Problem is, unbeknownst to you and despite your measuring accuracy, the calories listed on the food labels and internet do not match the particular food you ate, and you actually had 2250 calories. Now, 350 calories isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I don't think people should be fussing over that kinda thing... but that's exactly my point. The whole reason for being anal about keeping track was, for most people, so you could be precise and know exactly where you were... except you don't know, no matter how hard you try, because some things are out of your control, and it's near impossible to know if they're wrong unless you have a personal team of scientists checking/verifying stuff every day for you. And this is even before we get into the more complex issues such as digestion/absorption, which varies from individual to individual and is probably even harder to nail down.

Um.... but yeah, aside from that mini-rant, which had more to do with certain individuals, and not the article, I liked it.

2013 Pre-Olympia Press Conference

LOL. So at about the 50 minute mark one of the bodybuilders is being interviewed, but he's one of two guys who don't speak English. Here's how it goes:

- The co-host tells us what the question is in English
- Then the co-host relates the same question to the translator in German
- Then the translator translates it from German to Persian for the bodybuilder
- Then the bodybuilder gives his answer in Persian
- Then the translator translates the Persian to German
- Then the co-host translates the German to English and tells us what the bodybuilder said

Abba Hezekiah is against weight lifting :(

True ascesis is found through convict conditioning.
Blessed Nazarius practiced the ascetic life. His clothes were tattered. He wore his shoes without removing them for six years.

I know that feeling as well... if it helps, and you can't consider the opinions of just about everybody irrelevant insofar as they aren't helpful, then at least tell yourself that most people don't care, and if they do care then so what? Arnold wasn't built in a day (it took at least 4 or 5 days, even with the then-legal steroids :P ) If it really gets to you though, there's nothing wrong with doing pushups, pullups, and the like until you feel ready to go (fwiw, there's a prominent guy named Scooby--or at least the was, I assume he's still around--on youtube and elsewhere, who advocated sticking with bodyweight stuff).

I joined a Planet Fitness. I feel so... like I have betrayed all that is good in this world. Like unto Esau with his soup, I have given away my dignity for a cheap gym membership.

Overall it was a very nice place though. Should be great to work out there.

Some people don't like the way they have tootsie rolls on the front counter or give you pizza once a week, seeing it as  absurd, patronizing or devious ("go to gym, burn off 100 calories, eat 300 calories, repeat process"). Others don't like that, at least in some locations, they have limited equipment, sometimes exclude certain equipment favored by more 'hardcore' gym people, and sometimes go so far as to have equipment altered to make it less useful to hardcore types. The main criticism, and my issue with them as well, is that they try to attract people by claiming to be a 'judgment free zone,' and yet their national marketing is mostly based around how they discriminate against people. In one commercial you'll see a big bodybuilder portrayed as an idiot, saying 'I life things up and put them down,' and Planet Fitness will tell you about their 'lunk alarm' (this is a real life 'alarm' in their gyms, in case someone is being a 'lunk'); in another commercial you'll see three snobby women standing around talking like fictional snobby girls do, with someone who is supposed to be a 'regular' woman sitting in the background and feeling out of place. The message is: regular folks can feel comfortable here, because we aren't like other places, and we make sure the undesirables are excluded. In this case those undesired, at least in the ads, are bodybuilders, stuck up fitness bunnies, etc. I have no problem with a gym* excluding people (I think Curves--for only women members--is a great idea, for example), I just wish they'd stop being so hypocritical about it. Though apparently how things actually are in their gyms isn't really much related to what is going on in their commercials, and it's mostly like any other national chain and varies from location to location.

Compilation of some of their commercials
Joke bit from Comedy Central

*Though they also say that "we're not a gym, we're Planet Fitness"
