AYSF and prayer rules
« on: September 11, 2012, 07:27:25 PM »
Do Orthodox Christians need their spiritual father to approve any changes in their prayers rules, or is that just a monastic thing?
Apart from moral conduct, all that man thinks himself able to do in order to become acceptable to God is mere superstition and religious folly. - Immanuel Kant

Please ask your priest about any changes you wish to take regarding your prayer life.
The memory of God should be treasured in our hearts like the precious pearl mentioned in the Holy Gospel. Our life's goal should be to nurture and contemplate God always within, and never let it depart, for this steadfastness will drive demons away from us. - Paraphrased from St. Philotheus of Sinai

It's a monastic thing*. Although it's certainly a good idea to consult with others (like your parish priest) who have more experience/training/etc.

*The exception is if you receive a particular prayer/prayer rule/etc during confession. In that case, yes, you need to speak with your confessor before changing it.

For it were better to suffer everything, rather than divide the Church of God. Even martyrdom for the sake of preventing division would not be less glorious than for refusing to worship idols. - St. Dionysius the Great

My priest's answer essentially agreed with witega's.
