Sayings Type Books
« on: August 30, 2012, 11:18:21 PM »
Apart from the Sayings of the Desert Fathers and Philokalia, what "sayings" types of Orthodox literature is out there? I'm thinking of texts that have short little stories, sayings or maxims, which may or may not be connected to the other statements around them.  For an example of what I mean, from St. Mark the Monk...

Quote
It is a great virtue to accept patiently whatever comes and, as the Lord enjoins, to love a neighbor who hates you.

The sign of sincere love is to forgive wrongs done to us. It was with such love that the Lord loved the world.

We cannot with all our heart forgive someone who does us wrong unless we possess real knowledge. For this knowledge shows us that we deserve all we experience.

You will lose nothing of what you have renounced for the Lord’s sake. For in its own time it will return to you greatly multiplied.

Sure, something along that line would work (thanks for mentioning it!)  :)

Those'll work! :)

The Gospel of Thomas

Well, I suppose if it's good enough for Met. Kallistos, it's good enough for me!

There is a book called Living Without Hypocrisy which is comprised of sayings by the Optina Elders.

But it had not been in Tess's power - nor is it in anybody's power - to feel the whole truth of golden opinions while it is possible to profit by them. She - and how many more - might have ironically said to God with Saint Augustine, "Thou hast counselled a better course than thou hast permitted."
Thomas Hardy, Tess of the D'Urbervilles
