My godfather (sponsor) went to the front with me when I was Chrismated.  He also went with for the 3 subsequent Eucharists thereafter.  We both carried candles during the 3 subsequent Eucharists.

it depends on the church. a God parent should care about your spiritual life and encourage you to read the Bible and give you occasional spiritual gifts like icons (in the coptic church, the religious pictures we have at home are very cheap, not like in some churches, so it is a standard present) or spiritual booklets. you have to find out from your church what God parents do, i expect no one will mind you asking!
