Ethiopian vestments
« on: September 15, 2013, 11:07:50 PM »
I'm beginning to encounter the liturgical practice of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (there is a church near me, although it's a bit of a journey, but I intend to make it there sometime), and I remain astounded by the beautiful variety of liturgical rites. But being a bit of a liturgical nerd, I've been looking at photographs of Ethiopian clergy and liturgies, and attempting to figure out the vestments, and I've ended up with some questions.

1) Who wears the vestment that looks like a shoulder-length cape with long pieces of cloth hanging off it? http://www.ethiovirginmary.org/files/Deacon_Hiruy_Seyoum.jpg I usually see it on people who look like deacons (or subdeacons? altar servers? there seem to be a lot of them per liturgy), but I've also seen examples of a priest wearing one over his cope. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/76/Zewditu_and_favored_priest.png

2) Does an Ethiopian bishop wear anything like an omophorion? Or does he wear something larger, like a Coptic ballin, which wraps around the head and torso? http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ui39E8cpUMc/USsRWrd7aiI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/y55Gtf7_k_Q/s1600/181934_105778756169254_2831228_n.jpg

I used to attend Ethiopian Orthodox churches, but I never learned what goes with who I'm afraid except in a general way :-/.

Here's a bishop vested to serve the Divine Liturgy though (the new patriarch, Abune Matthias): http://www.pravmir.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/02.jpg

No omophor-like garment that I've ever noticed, but I only tended to go to places where bishops would be on great feasts, and about 3 or 4 hours into a middle of the night service one tends to stop noticing much of anything :-D.

This might help:

This actually confused me more. The translation provided didn't say very much about vestments (though interesting, it was an overview). Then, in the video, I saw clergy wearing the kaba lanka (it sounded like that's the term they were using, also sp?) with a stole over top of it, which also confused me as I don't think I've seen that before. Are they also wearing another stole under a cope (it looked like they were wearing a cope underneath all that)?

I need to find time to go to this church and see for myself.
