Metallica easily. They are the one name that stands out to me above the rest. Then again, I've never been a metal head really.

I know most would shelve them away as simply being 'progressive', but Gentle Giant and King Crimson managed to create some hard-rocking, melodically intricate and down-right gorgeous music.

I picked Iron Maiden (for heavy metal) and Led Zeppelin (for hard rock), Hallowed Be Thy Name is, IMO, the best heavy metal song ever and Robert Plant is, again IMO, the best rock singer ever (well he's tied with Freddy Mercury but Queen's not hard rock). But where is Guns n Roses, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, KISS, Motley Crue, Anthrax and Slayer???

If I voted I would choose Sabbath under a little protest, but I pretty much loath the rest. Pretty much would have done the same. I think Rolling Stones are much better at rock than Lead Balloon. If we are going for the Ultra-Heavy Nordic stuff I'd go with Amon Amarth hands down. I abhor hair bands, though Guns and Roses have a few decent ones. I guess #2 would have to be Rammstein as they are one of my all time favorites. Some groups did heavy stuff but were more known for other things. Iggy Pop and David Bowie both had some heavy albums...actually, Iggy Pop was mostly heavy if not punk though I mostly listen to him for The Idiot. The Man Who Sold the World was almost proto-metal, especially listening to Supermen and All the Madmen. Gary Numan started out punk, and while he kind of peaked with Replicas, IMHO, his new stuff isn't all that bad and is reasonably heavy.

If I'm only going off of the bands provided, and narrowing it to one album, I'd cast my vote for Kalmah - The Black Waltz, but notable mentions would be Nightwish - Oceanborn and Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder. All Finnish bands, mind you. But overall this list strikes me as ridiculous, pitting many bands against one another that have no business duking it out.

If we limit it to just the 80s, then Iron Maiden & Queensryche. Allowing for a third then also Metallica.
For the 70s, Black Sabbath & Judas Priest. Zeppelin is above and beyond the genre.
For the 90s on, who cares.

Yeah, I can understand how his voice could be annoying to some. It never bothered me. The music is so powerful and his voice just seems to fit. But for those who can't get used to it, I don't blame them. Selam

I picked Zepplin and Rage Against The Machine... Rage doesnt seem like they fit in with the rest of those bands. They probably arent the "best" band on the list, but theyre my favorite of all of them. Im fairly young and dont listen to as much classic rock/metal as i should...

What about GN'R? Their best album set was issued then. IMO Appetite for Destruction was their best album by far, nothing since ever got close. I'd like to give Chinese Democracy a shot, but haven't heard anything from it. Been way out of the loop since becoming an old geezer.

The 90's gave us Norwegian black metal and death metal, the highest and best forms of metal. Of course it also brought us nu-metal, but I can't say that nu-metal is any worse than the 80's hair metal.

The 90's gave us Norwegian black metal and death metal, the highest and best forms of metal. Of course it also brought us nu-metal, but I can't say that nu-metal is any worse than the 80's hair metal.
Inferior knock-offs of Celtic Frost & Venom and, of course, the big 4. Venom sucks and always has. Celtic Frost has some winners, but the fact that you exclude Bathory, Tormentor, and Sarcofago reveals that you are a false. No entry.
