I love watching this stuff! It's like crack! I don't battle myself, though. So sound off! Favorite tiers, movesets, battlers? I enjoy NU, especially pyrotoz' battles. He's awesome. Check out this really close match he had with flamedawg6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cGKDz0z9DkBut, my favorite battler would definitely have to be fiercebirdofflame no matter what tier he plays, though. He is, to put things simply, a beautiful man. Definitely needs more subs! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFB_YNF4Ogc&feature=plcp It's too bad he doesn't upload more often... In terms of the metagame, I'm pretty excited about Technician Breloom. I've never seen Bullet Seed look so good! Imposter Ditto and Reiyujiu/Therian Kamis are all pretty beast too.

The only Pokémon games that I've played were games from the first two generations: Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal, Pokémon Stadium, and Pokémon Stadium 2. But I don't follow the new Pokémon games.

Some people do actually still record Red and Blue battles from time to time.
I do have some fond memories of Stadium!

lolz There is actually a game called Pokemon Conquest that's an RTS that mixes Pokemon battles and the history of the Japanese Wars of Unification. I wish someone would do that with Medieval Europe. They already have Pokemon in reference to the Three Musketeers. It would be cool if there was a full scale adaptation of the novel.

Cool. What teams are you using? In SoulSilver, I've got Meganium, Quagsire, Ampharos, Magcargo, Xatu, and Tauros. I'm kind of stuck at the Elite Four, though. My team is underleveled, so I'd have to spend quite some time level grinding, plus they don't have very good natures, unfortunately. I really like Magcargo, concept wise, but I think it was a mistake trying to go through the game with one. I also didn't realize Shell Smash did not exist till Gen 5

On the Musketeers topic. I might be persuaded to write that up as a fan fic, even though it's likely been done before but I've just never seen it, heh. It really deserves to be a comic though, and I can't draw nothin lol...
I also have a faint idea of the Pokemon version of Ceasar's conquests.

In Gold I've once enterred Indigo Plateau with a team on 35th

Yeah, it probably doesn't matter much for in game stuff.
Competitive matches can be won or lost based on a couple of stat points, so that's where it really counts.

I mean this in all seriousness: Between this and the "bronies" thing, can someone explain to me when being a hip, cool guy or whatever you'd call it became all about liking things that 5-8 year olds like, despite being an adult man in your 20s (later? earlier?)? I absolutely don't get it. I don't even get it enough to judge it. It's just incomprehensible.

I meant of course it's incomprehensible, ha, but fwiw... I've never played this game (Pokemon), and don't get the Bronies thing either. However, I think I understand the spirit of it. This is just something these guys/girls enjoy, and they won't have someone else dictate to them how old they have to be to enjoy it. I mean, who gets to decide that playing with a horse shoe or lifting heavy objects over and over qualify as "adult" activities, while other things don't? I feel the this way, anyway--if I enjoy something, I don't care whether it is considered a non-adult thing by some people. For several years in my 20s I played with Lego, for example. I really didn't care that it was marketed and made for kids. And I stopped not because I felt ashamed or like it was immature, but simply because I didn't enjoy it (well, that, and I can't afford it, but even if I could I still didn't enjoy it anymore). Anyway, that's my line of thinking on it...

I dunno. Bronyism started in 2010 as a 4Chan thing. They've always had a weird fascination with cute/girly things (some of them like them ironically, some seriously). I'm not sure how it spread to non-Anons though (I'm not an Anon, btw). I wouldn't call competitive Pokemon battling "hip," though. It's kind of still in the subculture stages (began around 2004, when new features of the third generation games made it possible to pump up your Pokemon as far as they were made to go). Friendship is Magic likely would not have taken off like this if it wasn't for several forerunners which paved the way for twentysomethings being into cartoons. Powerpuff Girls, which started as something of an ironic parody for adults called Whoopass is one of the most important. The combination of Craig McCraken's (Lauren Faust, who was head writer and show runner for the first season of Friendship is Magic is McCracken's wife and writing partner) dry humor and sense of comic book-style spectacle made for a show with wide multi-generational appeal despite being about cute little girls. McCraken's other success, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends along with the similarly themed Spongebob were hits with the older set for similar reasons. One could also go back further to Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and even Looney Tunes being as popular with kids as with their parents. I suppose one could make the argument as well that it's a symptom of kids moving back in their folks after college and generally being in a sort of post-adolescence, but I'm not a psychologist or anything. Me personally (I'm 26) though, I try not to follow trends. I'm just a lover of animation and of all things Nintendo.

Yeah, that's pretty much the way I feel. Model trains, fishing, sports, karaoke, one could point to all kinds of equivalents that someone in another time and place might find childish. I'm reminded of Tacitus' rant against the men of Rome's love for chariot races.
