'St. Augustine Pray for Me'

« on: June 25, 2012, 09:40:47 PM »

I've recently discovered that I am...Not only am I a dirty latin Scholastic but also a contrarian. When I'm around liberals I argue for conservatism, when around conservatives for liberalism. Around atheists I argue for religion, when around the religious I argue for irreligion. Around Protestants I argue for Orthodoxy, around Orthodox for Roman Catholicism, around Roman Catholics I argue  for Protestantism. My brother wants McDonalds, I want Burger King. I even argue with myself. If you tell me that I am a contrarian then I will most likely deny it and argue against it like a big baby. And if you tell me that I am not a contrarian I will then probably try and convince you that I am one.

Anyone else suffer from this cynical condition?

I can relate. I like to challenge liberals and conservatives alike. On this forum I've been accused of being a raving fundamentalist and a flaming liberal. I definitely have a contrarian streak in me. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. Contrarians help to challenge the satus quo, but contrarians are often full of pride. I know I am.

I dont think you're a contrarian, unless you actually believe what you're saying. In discussions like what you mentioned, there is nothing wrong with playing "devil's advocate".

I wouldn't say that I'm a contrarian but it seems that often my opinions don't fit into neat liberal/conservative boxes. Thus I am too liberal for conservatives and too conservative for liberals. Though I do think that "liberal" and "conservative" are terms which are generally so poorly defined/understood that it makes discussion difficult, if not downright futile. Of course, that's never stopped me!

I am not a contrarian, but I sometimes give off the vibe because I do not like the lack of nuance or honesty many people who embrace nebulous self-identifications like “conservative” and “liberal” (or, dare I say, “Catholic” and “Orthodox”) often display.

And I am certainly guilty of the above as well, at least on the Internet. I suppose that doesn’t make me contrarian so much as it makes me a hypocrite.

In real life I am not that confrontational, preferring instead to make non-committal nods and remind myself that I’m at least supposed to believe that I’m a worse sinner than the person talking.

I've heard Puzata Hata is great!  Can you ship us some?  :-D

The only instances that I catch myself being a "contrarian" is when speaking about Ukrainian Orthodoxy.  I will defend all things Ukrainian, .....until I  get in a discussion with some members of the KP crowd, who blindly defend all things Ukrainian to the detriment of all things Orthodox....and I find myself defending Orthodoxy against things Ukrainian.

To be honest.....it kills me.

I sometimes can fall into this category, especially when debating with liberals and conservatives separately. I use to identify my self as a liberal conservative (being too liberal for conservatives and too conservative for liberals) until I found out about the Libertarian Party. However, I find that this usually stops with just politics as when around Protestants or Catholics I argue for Orthodoxy, I don't argue against religion per se, but maybe against certain religions or denominations and their practices, and I don't argue for atheism, or agnosticism. Although I will always be accused that I love to argue, which is true, though it is something that I have been working on for quite sometime (I must admit that this is a trait I get directly from my father, and probably my brother as well. It has served me some good since it ultimately led me to Orthodoxy, but it tends to sour some of my relationships.)
