"When I took the job, I braced myself for criticism, expecting many people — without even watching the show — to instantly label it girly, stupid, cheap, for babies or an evil corporate commercial. I encourage skeptics like this to watch My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic with an open mind. If I'm doing my job right, I think you'll be surprised."

—Lauren Faust

One of the biggest reasons that I'm proud to be a brony is that it's just so delightfully unlikely... and needed. This summer I've really been discovering just how much simple joy animation gives me and just how much I wanted to go into it when I was young. Though I doubt I ever had the talent necessary to overcome some early discouragement- I still think that animation is, has been, and can be a true form of art (and as such a gift from God to be used to His glory).

Lauren Faust and the rest of the crew achieved something seemingly impossible. They took one of the least taken seriously franchises ever, something that could have easily spawned yet another in a sea of "evil corporate commercials" and they made it something witty, genuinely endearing, and (most impressively) actually watchable for someone over the age of ten. Animation aimed at girls is something that for years has been in dire need of depth and quality. I'm not entirely sure why this is so while at the same time there have been many quality shows aimed at the boys, but whatever the reason, I consider it very important to support a show with even a tiny glimmer of hope of fighting back the tide of vapidity.

I'm not saying that FiM is the second coming of Chuck Jones. I recognize that it has it's flaws and moments of weak writing, but it's sure as heck better than a lot of things out there and most importantly it's a step in the right direction. It's a step back towards art. And in a field already glutted with crap for both genders, it's an very important thing.

Btw, this is an excellent example of rack focus, something that's kind of hard to pull off, I'm told.

It is brilliant what Lauren Faust has done, but even she was surprised by what happened, but the beautiful thing is she embraced it!

In the animation a lot of artistic people take a lot of notice. I am marveled by the artwork myself. Personally the plot, while simple, is witty and humorous. I don't think people can help but fall in love with all the characters, because they all have something loveable about them, and they balance each other out. It truly is a good show to watch when you have had a bad day, it really makes you smile.

If someone judges that as "gay" or "girly", I do not care.
Forgive my sins.

You Finns are so strange.  ;)

More like epic and awesome. It seems that I have to buy this shirt of theirs. Ukkosmaine FTW!

I attended their worship service yesterday. Too bad that nobody seem to have uploaded any videos on Youtube but anyway it was awesome. I would call it gay but since their lyrics are fairly heteronormative I call it sweaty and ecstatic instead.

What are they saying? The chorus is something like, "I dream of riding ponies with you" according to Google translate.

That's just about correct. ;D Their lyrics are mostly extremely corny and childish love stories and some references to city where they are from.

True, and I'm actually a fan of DBZ, but it's kind of hard to argue that it's "manly" and doesn't lend itself to a lot of homoeroticism (Something the creators seemed to be aware of. Note the Village People-inspired one-off character in the last episode of the Buu Saga).

Outside of that, what else about it is gay? lol
Not much else, I guess. Aside from the awkward instances that are open to interpretation in pretty much any show. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/HoYay/DragonBall

Yeah, my biggest beef is that the plots kind of stick firmly in the "bag of standard cartoon scenarios" even for big events like Return of Harmony and A Canterlot Wedding, but I guess when you have to turn out one a week for about five months it's to be expected. And I marvel at what they've been able to do with what they were given.

For this reason, one of my favorite episodes is Luna Eclipsed because of the way it touches on the actual effects of having been in a thousand year slumber which I haven't really seen another fairy tale type story do (it's also apparently a nod to some fan comics).

So I discovered Friendship is Witchcraft a few days ago. That stuff's funny, I don't care who you are. Sweetie Bot is the best pony.

Also, Epic Cupcake Time.

When is Season 3 starting?

And I have a new favorite quote for the haters:

"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. ... When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

I downloaded some fan-made Flash character models, just to poke around with, and that is some insane stuff. I'm no Flash expert, but I know the basics, and I can hardly believe they do MLP in Flash. It seems like it'd be cumbersome, but the results are amazing. Especially in the second half of season 2, the fluidity of the animation really approaches Disney-quality cel animation.

There are MLP fans from the 80s who don't like the new show, but having seen both, there is just no comparison in production quality.

Middle of September, I think.

I'm joining the September 22 bandwagon for Season 3 starting. If so, I'd expect official word probably this week. SO... 34 days.

In the meantime, I'm catching up on some good music, since I've not yet gotten into that aspect of the fandom. A few of my current faves:

I must slip some of these into the Songs You're Listening To thread at some point in time.  :police:

This show could easily stand up next to any Disney animated musical. It's really become that good.

I've been watching me some Ponies season 2, and it's pretty awesome. Better than the first season. I completely lost it a few times. I'm pretty sure typical kids shows don't cameo Big Lebowski characters. Lol.

Alas, I already ordered a Rainbow Dash plushie from someone on dA, which I'm greatly looking forward to instead. (Thankfully she's a promising newbie to the plushie scene, so it won't cost an ungodly amount of money.)

It's true.  :-\

And based on the timing (and standard practice in the broadcast world) they will probably stagger the new episodes with reruns, every other week.

Oh well. New ponies are always welcome, even if there's less. I bet S3 will be epic anyway.
