Need some suggestions.
« on: February 16, 2015, 06:48:30 PM »
I am currently a catechumen in ROCOR and am looking for some suggestions on keeping my eyes on Christ. It seems like there is a tug of war going on inside. One part of me is worldly and the other part is striving for Theosis. I feel like I am climbing a mountain. Maybe I just need some encouragement. Butit feels like Im in a wrestling match.

Small prayer breaks during the day may help. A few minutes here and there.

Also, try to read a little Scripture every day. If not that, then a few times a week. Just a chapter or two at a time. More if you are up to it. :)

Lord have mercy.
He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will have no end.

Lord, have mercy on Rich.

Read a little devotional material each day -- better yet, replace at least one thing you normally do for leisure with a little devotional reading.

Make friends (even if just online) who are earnest about Christ, and take time for one-on-one conversations with them -- again, perhaps taking the place of some of the time you're used to spending in lighter conversation.

Start a spiritual journal.
One hides amid pornography, angry music, television that shows the worst of mankind, misanthropic politics, an internet populace led by all the passions: and then one asks, "Where is God?"

Maybe it's because you are in a wrestling match. "For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness". You think the spiritual hosts of wickedness are going to let you go that easily? Pray the Jesus prayer. As my priest says, prayer is the answer to everything.
Thy Bridal Chamber, I see adorned, O my Savior, and have no wedding garment that I may enter.  Enlighten the vesture of my soul, O Giver of Light, and save me.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound all creepy-like. Better to tell your priest you are struggling and let him offer advice about prayer, unless you have already been introduced to the Jesus prayer.  I think struggles are to be expected, and that it the first thing my priest advised.  But he also is quick to remind me that I am not alone in this, nor are you.

You are right. It is like climbing a mountain.
Though I think one cannot climb a mountain in one step.
