Sure, shake his hand, give him a high five!

Address him as "brother or deacon".

"Father-Deacon" or "Father" are correct forms of address, if you worry about such things.

Greeks will generally kiss the hand of a deacon, while Slavs will not (or so I understand).

If you are anywhere near as obscene in real life as those gyrating hips are in your avatar, then I'd just avoid him altogether!

But yeah... I'd just go with "Dcn. X" unless everyone was doing something different, but that's just me.

I guess I always found my self saying Deacon-X.. but otherwise I would say Father. I do not think its the best idea to just do as everyone else does.

haha funny. But I meant to replace X with his name. So if his name is Joseph, for example, call him Deacon Joseph, or else, call him Father.

At our church, the deacon changes regularly, as well as sometimes the position of deacon is filled by a seminarian who grew up in our parish (I know his younger brothers rather well). Since the deacon is generally this person who we know, many people just call him by his name. When we have another deacon, Father Deacon is appropriate.

Defiantly agree with the above.

Greeks will generally kiss the hand of a deacon, while Slavs will not (or so I understand).

It is not protocol among Greek style Orthodox Christians to kiss the hand of a deacon, who does not have the liturgical authority to "bless."

Give him a high five.  Just like when Deacon Earnest Fry does the up high and down low with Clarence, as Clarence says "yo Deak."

Nor among anyone that I know.  Again, the Amen Philadelphia high five will work just fine (remember, "yo Deak").

Hmmm, I always thought it odd, but I have been instructed on multiple occasions to kiss the deacon's hand.

What about during liturgy? For example, when handing him the censer?

I also thought it was improper, and refrained from so doing, until "corrected".

It's probable the people who have "corrected" me are simply wrong, so to Gabriel -- please just listen to everyone else in this thread, hah.

While we're on the topic, isn't it easier for the Slavs to tell deacons from priests outside of the liturgical context due to the pectoral cross?
