Eastern orthodox music
« on: June 10, 2012, 03:27:02 PM »
Not sure if this has already been done but here goes.
I thought that since the oriental orthodox have made a thread about oriental orthodox music, we could have our own music thread. I'm talking about chants, prayers, psalms, anything you can come up with  :)

I found this very beautiful russian prayer

Do not be cast down over the struggle - the Lord loves a brave warrior. The Lord loves the soul that is valiant.

Here is one of my favorites: the Paraclesis to the Theotokos as chanted in Greek by monks from Mt. Athos.

Click on it. It is so beautiful.

The memory of God should be treasured in our hearts like the precious pearl mentioned in the Holy Gospel. Our life's goal should be to nurture and contemplate God always within, and never let it depart, for this steadfastness will drive demons away from us. - Paraphrased from St. Philotheus of Sinai
Writings from the Philokalia: On Prayer of the Heart,
Translated from the Russian by E. Kadloubovksy and G.E.H. Palmer, Faber and Faber, London, Boston, 1992 printing.

According to clock time and calendar time the approval of threads may seem to be long delayed, but in sacred time it is always near at hand, always imminent.

There's this Finnish Thrash Metal song which seems to be about fools-for-Christ. It's not a Christian band so I'm not entirely convinced that it's a religious song but at least the singer/writer of the lyrics is an Orthodox Christian so he must be familiar with the concept and using the Orthodox imagery even it's not a religious song. The lyrics are about fighting against idea that intelligence is the greatest of virtues and willingly making fool of oneself for someone.
But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
