OK, so most of us have heard of 'The Mancave', a room inside the house, such as the basement or garage or attic or office, or outside the house such as a wood shed or tool room, where "guys can do as they please" without fear of upsetting any female sensibility about house decor or design. Once upon a time it known as 'The Den' (a name I prefer). My question is- do any of you married Orthodox have such a place or feel the need for such a place?

I'm not sure about feeling the need. I know my ex thought I had no right to it.

Eh mancaves generally imply manly sins such as porn, masturbation, excessive drinking or other forms of crudeness. Not sure if a mancave is really appropriate for the Orthodox man. I understand that women can be such a burden when it comes to decorating and furniture, and that the female in the household might want to furnish your mancave according to her taste, but, to be honest, I think that it is worth it. Let her decorate it the way she wants to, all that matters is that you have a quite place where you can escape the rest of the household. I'm not too picky about the room as long as I have a comfortable chair, bookshelf and coffee maker.

When I was Orthodox and married (good times, good times) I didn't have any particular place my own. I liked being left alone at times during the day, and my wife respected that, so she'd just leave the room for a couple hours (or until I went to wherever she was). I never really had a bunch of guys over to do manly things, so that wasn't a problem. I'm being very unhelpful I suppose. Eh mancaves generally imply manly sins such as porn, masturbation, excessive drinking or other forms of crudeness. Are you saying that all those mancaves I saw built or remodeled on HGTV are now being used... for... NO, on second thought, don't tell me!

I thought I was using it to keep all of my books. I suppose one man's masturbation cave is another man's library? I did get drunk in there a few times, but some books are meant to be read with a complementary whiskey, especially older, musty volumes. Alas, though, I gave up my personal space so my daughter could have a bedroom. Such is the white martyrdom of family life.

Yes...a good Christian sacrifice, befitting of a true father. "Give up your mancave and follow me" and all that...

Haha. My friend has a "man cave" that is a little recording studio, too. He's not Orthodox, so no icon corner, but it does feature a dead/fried computer guts corner, for building frankencomputers out of (he's a tech guy at a major medical technology company, so he brings home all kinds of electronics junk that they would otherwise throw out). As far as I can tell, his wife likes it. After all, if all of his instruments and computer junk weren't in there, it'd actually be in the common areas of the house, and then there'd probably be a problem.
(They don't have kids yet, though, so I'm guessing there will be a massive sell-off of a lot of this stuff in a little while...hellllooo, cheap guitar amp!)

Eh mancaves generally imply manly sins such as porn, masturbation, excessive drinking or other forms of crudeness. If you say so I guess, maybe some do but my cave was about a Pepsi collection now in boxes in the basement. If (when) I reconstitute it the Pepsi stuff will come back, also music: albums and instruments, computers, lots of books, assorted electronics, sofa, easy chairs, a TV, soda machine, fridge, fantasy style posters, the Harley and other motorcycles collection, my colors unless I'm wearing them, and possibly a sword or two or four, and no doubt some Icons.

Though JamesR's description seems to be what many women think goes on in a mancave...they seem to be very suspicious...makes me wonder what they would do with a womancave if they didn't have total run of the whole house. St. Paul seems to have left that warning out.

I've never had one and never wanted one. I've never understood the reasoning behind things like 'man-caves' or 'boys' nights out' (or girls' for that matter). I realise that I appear to be in a tiny minority amongst the male population but there genuinely is nobody I'd rather spend my time with than my wife and we really share everything (well in so far as it's possible to). That's what I always felt marriage should be about and, thanks to God, for me it is. And I'm not recently married either - we'll have our 11th anniversary in couple of months.
James

I assure you, a man cave is necessary for these exact reasons. When the entire apartment is taken up by the woman's stuff these activities need to find a place to reside...and sometimes the living room becomes the only acceptable option.

My wife actually wants me to have a mancave. And honestly I would prefer to have a place where I can go to relax and smoke my pipe, read, and sip my tea (or other beverage) that has some solitude. Now would I keep my wife and daughter completely out? Never (unless I'm smoking, after which I would vacuum and use an air purifier). I love my family too much to keep them out of my life.
The last few times I had a "mancave" or a den/study I never kept it all to myself, and my wife used it a lot as well since that is where the main computer was.

I'm pretty much the same way. At the moment, my "mancave'' is the basement where the laundry gets done as well as where our pantry is (blasted tiny galley kitchens!). It's where I go to practice my guitar playing and do some home recording, muck about on the computer, and where my "private" icon corner is (which isn't all that private, just where the quietest part of the house is usually). We moved the fake fireplace from upstairs in the living room down there and it has quite a homely feel to it. It's very much "my" stuff down there, but it's not "my" mancave.

Don't let's be silly. Jack on the rocks has been my drink of choice for years. Which isn't to say that I don't like wine (but give me red or give me death), only that I do love whiskey.

Because females do not engage in porn, masturbation, excessive drinking or other forms of crudeness. Well they gossip and speak ill of other women, so imagine the mancave but replace the men with women and the whiskey with white wine and add the gossiping element and then you have the woman-cave. You need to stop watching Desperate Housewives. That would be a start, but not a complete cure.

Eh mancaves generally imply manly sins such as porn, masturbation, excessive drinking or other forms of crudeness.

Don't let's be silly. Jack on the rocks has been my drink of choice for years. Which isn't to say that I don't like wine (but give me red or give me death), only that I do love whiskey. Point of clarification: Jack Daniels is to real whiskey as clown masses are to actual worship.

I imagine if I get married my hobbies will be confined to a cave. Pipe smoking, large amps/speaker cabinets, Orthodox items, home brew, tea stashes, etc. I'm a bit eccentric

Because females do not engage in porn, masturbation, excessive drinking or other forms of crudeness. Sure they don't. Just ask them. We know different women. LOL. Did the sarcasm get derailed somewhere? What I meant was that the women I'm friends with would probably not lie about it like the women you know Well then the sarcasm is right on track.

Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more. A hasty quarrel kindles fire, and urgent strife sheds blood. If you blow on a spark, it will glow; if you spit on it, it will be put out; and both come out of your mouth

When im on a budget, I go Evan Williams Black Label. Dont knock it till you try it. Surprisingly good for $13-$14 for a whole liter.

Well, you're a grown woman, and what you choose to do to your palette in the privacy of your own home is your own business. But James is still young and impressionable so we owe it to him try to set a better example... :-p

I thought I'd read that too...but not to worry, once homosexuality gets excepted we'll need a new perversion to push, so perhaps we all can make a push for polyandry!

Give me open marriage if you will, or make me take up the heavy burden of monogamy if you must, but do not think, good sir, that I would allow you to force a perversion like polyandry on me!
