Just How Big Was the Biggest Earthquake?

This week marks the anniversary of the largest earthquake recorded, a magnitude-9.5 along southern Chile's coast in 1960...

Wow, and I was in that Virginia quake...man......I feel lucky now. So if the Tokyo quake is 35,000+X more powerful than mine, does that mean we would have talked about it here lcoally 35,000 times longer?

This week marks the anniversary of the largest earthquake recorded, a magnitude-9.5 along southern Chile's coast in 1960...
And to think I'm essentially sitting on top of a fault that has generated 9.0+ earthquakes in the past, if old tsunami records in Japan are any indication.
