'Frightened' India child bride annuls marriageEighteen-year-old Laxmi Sargara found out she was married when her parents-in-law came to tell her that in a few days time they'd come back to take her to live with them. It was a few days before Akshaya Tritiya, an auspicious day for child marriages in India, when many parents in the poorest areas of the country promise their children to other families. Sargara was just one-year-old when she was married to Rakesh, then a three-year-old child from another village in the Jodphur district of Rajasthan...

I'm agnostic on the arranged or not debate. But I think if I had married my daughter off I might find some way to mention it to her--you know, just as an FYI.

Good for her. There are some possitive and negative qualities to arranged marriages, and this situation seemed to have some of the more negative ones. I'm glad she was able to get out of it.

I wa very impressed by the fact that her brother helped her (it would have happened in a Muslim family). Also, the social worker who helped her was wonderful. May the Lord help and protect her when/if she goes back to her village and family.

^You probably mean, "it would NEVER have happened in a Muslim family."
She would have been shot and killed, or burned with acid, or.....for the sake of family honor.

No, it has happened in Muslim families. I remember a case in the 80's(?), where the child bride (I think she was 9 or so) pitched a fit on the plane and a scandal ensued. But yeah, they don't as a rule have clue as to the true nature and purpose of marriage.

I was referring to the brother helping his sister "escape" the marriage. In a Muslim family, most brothers would kill their sisters if she left her husband's family.
At least, that is what I have heard...

Only if she failed to return to her own family. Since divorce doesn't have the stigma among Muslims (which has both good and bad affects in Muslim society), most couldn't care less unless she did something like leave him for an affair. Her going to live with her brother, for instance, is perfectly respectable in most situations.

At least, that is what I have heard... I heard Muslim siblings just eat each other for fun. A vicious bunch, for sure.
