If so, what was their influence? Or was this only a western thing?

They are read in the Eastern Churches. This is not "only a western thing", he was esteemed in the east before he was in the west.

Yeah, he was read in the east, and there was also a dispute even in the ancient church about who wrote the works.
Is it enough now, to tell you you matter?

Quite popular in the East. But I'm not sure how to answer your 'influence' question. One of the reason the Areopagite's corpus is popular in the East is that it's seen as representative of the entire underlying tradition. I mean the Areopagite's words on apohatic theology, the unknowability of God, are often quoted in Eastern theology texts--but unless he actually is St. Dionysius the Areopagite, he didn't invent the concept, its to be found in the highly influential Cappadocian fathers well before the assumed date of the Areopagite corpus' composition. The Areopagite simply did an excellent job of conveying it.

For it were better to suffer everything, rather than divide the Church of God. Even martyrdom for the sake of preventing division would not be less glorious than for refusing to worship idols. - St. Dionysius the Great
