Archbishop JovanUpon receiving the information that Archbishop Jovan of Ochrid was arrested on December 12, 2011, while entering the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) from the border with Greece, the Hierarchs of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America reaffirm the position taken by the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA) in August 2005, and furthermore restate that the persecution and new imprisonment of Archbishop Jovan by FYROM are an outrage, and ask for his immediate release.

FYI: For the benefit of those who may be confused. The F.Y.R. Macedonia is NOT to be confused with the territory of Greece referred to as Macedonia. F.Y.R. stands for 'Former Yugoslav Republic of' Macedonia and that region was once part of the former nation of Yugoslavia.

The issue is a passionate, political one in the Balkans and in Greece which has been simmering since the collapse of the Iron Curtain in the early 1990's and for my mind, that is all that needs to be said regarding the same.

Hope that clarifies things.

You are correct, however, the article doesn't say who arrested him only that he was arrested at the border.

That's obvious, given the history and the fact he was placed in a prison in FYR Macedonia.

Does anybody know if either the GOA or the Assembly of Bishops took similar action regarding the imprisonment of Abbot Ephraim of the Vatopedi Monastery?

They did not. Abbot Ephraim might not be as innocent as everyone makes him out to be. He is a very shrewd businessman for a monk.
