North Korea is an evil totalitarian state that starves their own people. Speaking out against the "Dear Leader" will get you and your entire family for three generations imprisoned in a concentration camp. There is no freedom of speech, press, religion, or freedom in general. The only religion is the personality cult of Kim Jong Il, who is worshipped as a god. North Korean children are taught that their country is the best in the world, and that Kim Jong Il was conceived immaculately. Defecting is punishable by torture and death. China has a policy that if they find any North Korean refugees in hiding, they will repatriate them to North Korea, in direct violation of UN protocols, where they face certain doom. Not only them, but their entire family. Children are born into concentration camps, grow up there, and die there. Pregnant female North Korean defectors, if repatriated, are raped and beaten until their fetuses die.

The only hope North Korean refugees have is a secretive network of underground shelters throughout China and South-east Asia. A modern day underground rail-road that works to get them into safe free nations like the United States and South Korea. Many of these shelters are run by a non-profit organization called LiNK (Liberty in North Korea). I am apart of the student chapter here at my university. LiNK directly maintains and operates safe houses, and directly works to get refugees asylum.
