Liza,

WOW.  You have a God-given gift.  These photographs are like Poetry.

Please, please, please, contact an Orthodox publisher and get them published in a book or something.

Often I go to the Religion section in Barnes and Noble and there is basically nothing on Orthodoxy.  (Why is that?Huh)  Your pictures speak volumes about Orthodoxy, the quiet peacefulness, the love of God, the contemplation of God's wisdom, the seeking nature of our souls, the joy.......  You should publish a book on the Orthodox experience in America, with all of your pictures of various settings to show more than what mere words can express.

Again, WOW.

I've never seen an Orthodox Church referred to as a 'basilica' before (only RC ones). What does that entail?

I don't honestly know.  It's the first Orthodox "basilica" I have come across, as well.

http://saintmarylivonia.com/home/#

This particular priest and parish are very "modern" minded, and wish to "fit in".  Perhaps they simply adopted the term to better "fit in to" the surrounding community.

I've wondered this myself, and the next time I see Fr. George I will make a point of asking him.

Yes, that's a bit clear especially when you look at the FAQ page on their website under "Our Beliefs." No disrespect intended, as I don't think it's a huge deal.

I feel like a little kid at a fireworks show every other picture I want to say "ooh" and on opposite ones "ah".  You all are amazing photographic artists with spectacular subject matter.

In honor of Proveedna Nedilya (St. Thomas Sunday), when we visit and pray at our family grave-sites...

My nieces and nephews cleaned everyone's graves...even the people we don't know....the girls planted flowers.

Lily discovered a hidden grave...that for years everyone assumed was just a big bush.

From this...

To this...

My uncle's grave and my future resting place...  Smiley

Thomas Sunday is lots of fun. They color eggs again bring them to the graves along with sweet bread and what not. The Gypsies used to pick up all the eggs left on the graves that day. Reminiscences .

I've heard that the homeless come and take the food.  It's kind of like a gift to the needy from those who have passed away.

We color eggs, and actually "roll" them on the grave.

One person on one side yells "Christos Voskrect" and rolls the egg.  Another on the other side grabs it and then throws it back yelling "Voistinu Voskrec!"

This is done top, down, then right to left...making the sign of the Cross over the grave.

Today's photos of the blessing of the graves, during St. Thomas Sunday (although this was the Saturday version).  Usually there are way more people in attendance but, it poured rain all night, and while the rain stopped, the gusty winds were blowing hard and the temps barely got in to the 40's....so, participation was scarce.  However, hopefully, tomorrow more will come.  Smiley

This year we had two children giving their First Confession on Palm Sunday.  I had the great honor of preparing them.  I told them that after they Confessed to step to the side and say their prayers - thanking God and asking for His forgiveness.  I told them they could even stand on the Solea to say their prayers.

...and here is the result.

We have the faithful and strong Disciple, and the humble and faithful Myrrhbearer.

How sweet are they!?!?

I take a week's vacation in the summer and teach Vacation Bible School.
The theme for this one was "Light of the World"....and all the activities and studies revolved around Light - from Proverbs...don't hide your light under a bushel....etc.

The kids

In class...

Study time outside...

One must have games...

Surfing on the land...

...getting eaten by a shark...

Checking out if Lifesavors Wintergreen candies really do SPARk when bitten (on the them of Light).  There's a long mirror in front of the kids and when I shut of the lights it was pitch black...and yes, they do spark.  It was really cool.

..time in the kitchen is always a hit.  This time we made LIGHT and fluffy cupcakes!

Continuing on the theme of LIGHT, they decorated these votives (glasses) and then we melted wax and poured them.

The kids wrote and performed skits on the last day, around the theme of "Letting their Light Shine"...where they made bad examples and then contrasted with what would have been the right thing to do, to let their light shine forth.

My new tenant....Under my porch roof I hung a "decorative" little bird house with a windchime underneath.  It was meant to be a decoration only.  It's tiny!  ....but, these little munchkins decided to raise a family in it.  Go figure!   ....and they sing up a storm!  Never heard birds sing so pretty!!!  What beauty God has provided us!!!!

When I was a small child growing up on the farm we had lots of bird nests in the barns. When I would go into the barns the birds would go out, generally through the best opening for them to do so, the one I had just came in.  Shocked  Must have frightened me something awful.  Angry To this day if a bird comes too close to my head I about hit the deck.  Embarrassed I know now that they wanted less contact with me than I with them, except maybe some swallows, but it's been terribly hard for me to shake it. Now, larger birds I'm okay with (chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys - yum), it's the little ones that cause me trouble. Oh, well. I still think they're pretty though, as long as they keep their distance.

My local Romanian Cathedral (St. George) was celebrating their 100th anniversary about a month ago.  After the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, celebrated by His Grace Irineu, they had an exhibit of various sacred objects used over the years.  As always, I decided to take some photos.  I couldn't really understand a word, but, the pastor of the church knows me and when I stood to take a group photo of everyone, he told the bishop who I was.....to which I got a reply for him "Ahhhh.....chemna Ukrayinka!"  (Good Ukrainian)  Enjoy!

From last week's 3 day VBS class:

Taking my lecture on candle symbolism to the extreme.  Among the various representation - light, sacrifice, etc...the kids loved the fact that the wax is flexible to remind us to be flexible to bend to the Will of God.  Smiley

The theme was:  The Lord is my ROCK, my FORTRESS, and my SALVATION.  Therefore, I had them to "rock" related crafts....here they create pavers out of concrete.  (I had no idea a bag of concrete weighed 80 lbs!  Where are the men, when I need them?)

For the FORTRESS...I had them build permanent sand castles/fortress, they could take home.  Cook sand with cornstarch.

Ice cream is always a hit!!!  Each year I order the truck that hires veterans...so, not only are the kids happy, the vets get a bit of help.

Guest speaker:

Learning a new version of the Lord's Prayer (different melody)

Growing rocks (crystals)

Dear Liza,

I loved the votives, etc.  In fact I'm going to suggest this for our summer camp next year.

If I wasn't forbidden to eat sugar I'd be hiding in the bathroom now with lifesavers!

You've been given the gift of an artistic eye, may you be blessed to keep using it to glorify God!

LOL!

You don't have to "eat" them....just bite and spit out.

I was doubtful that they would actually spark....but, boy did they!

The "votives" were just little glasses I bought at the dollar store...and we made them into votives.  The wax we used were the melted down remains of old beeswax candles....I just had to buy the wicks.  Make sure that you glue the wicks to the bottom of the glass before you pour the hot wax, otherwise, they float off to the side, and the candle won't burn.

We colored the votives with Sharpies (permanent markers), as I found real glass paint to be cost prohibitive.....and the one we tried, the color was too light, and the whole thing was too messy for little hands.  Just use the permanent markers and then spray a sealant over top....but, don't light until the sealant has completely dried!

Just some lessons ....learned the hard way.

Every year around the Feast day of the Transfiguration of our Lord, our church holds their annual picnic.
Here are some pics from this Sunday, which fell exactly on the Feast Day.

Baskets of fruit awaiting to get blessed.

A Typikon is served under the trees.

The blessing of the fruit, flowers and honey.

My blessed basket.

The kids of the Youth League sold ice cream and lemonade after lunch.

Pinata time!  I stuffed it with chocolates, bracelets, rubber animals, and noise makers.

It's a cheap way to entertain them!

Then I had them do a scavenger hunt - look for pine cone, leaves, something that begins with a D, feather, etc.

It wasn't all hectic....there were moments of complete and awesome peace.

...and out of the deep comes.....

He kept stealing the fish we were catching.  The moment one got caught, he would zoom in and snap it off the hook.

She was finally able to pull out a fish that she could keep!  Notice the disgruntled turtle in the water behind her.

...and then his girl friend showed up and he was happy again.

It's the name of the building type. Quite common in the EO.

It may be considered trolling, but why Ukrainians must add some rural element into everything? In every picture LizaSymonenko posts priests' vestments are decorated with flowers / ears of wheat / grapes. Most Ukrainian bands mix their genres (the only ones I know they  do not do it sing in Russian). Why is that?

I can speak to the wheat, grapes, flowers.....Ukrainian is a rural nation by large.  The country is known as the Bread Basket of Europe.  It has steppes and fields and is very agricultural.

The people are also very spiritual....the wheat, grapes and flowers, not only reflect the "nature" of the land given to the people by God, but, all have religious symbolism, as well - Christ is the staff of life (wheat), Grapes - the vineyard of the Lord, and flowers....well, they just are pure joy.

When I visited Ukraine....even the poorest homes, were brimming with flowers.  It was August and every yard was a riot of color - marigolds prevail, followed by phlox, roses, etc.   ...and of course the sunflower.  Smiley

As for the bands....I have no idea.  Not a big fan of any contemporary bands - Ukrainian or otherwise, so, I can't comment on that.

Okay...it's Great Lent....a time of new photos!

Here are some from the first week of Great Lent.  Pan-Orthodox Vespers at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.  His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas was present.  This was also the Eve of the Annunciation (New Calendar) and therefore, the Eve of their Patronal Feast Day.  Therefore, this was a Great Vespers....that ran well over 2 hours!

Enjoy!

Liza, humility is usually a desirable virtue - but not in this case! Your photographs carry a very personal and heart-felt imprint. At the very least, you would learn more about the craft through your participation in this competition.

I'm sure plenty of us on the forum would be willing to help with submission suggestions.

(edit to add: notice I've given my 2000th post to this cause - I think it ought to be a go!)

I would have to respectfully disagree.  I have had a lifelong interest in photography, so I have at least a passing idea of what a good photograph looks like.  This includes photographing weddings and developing photos professionally (not my proudest moment).  Your photos are excellent.  I have seldom seen such life and love come out of a two dimentional image.  In fact, even given the limitations of this board and Facebook, your photos still look better than most magazines.

To me, these photos are simply an attempt to capture and share the beauty that I witness when I am in Church.  I find Orthodoxy to be such a treasure.

How about this?  I have a number of photos, about 3,000 (turns red from embarrassment) that are organized in some 100 albums on Facebook.  Those of you have access to FB, I would appreciate it you would take a quick look, and let me know which ones you think should be submitted.  I have them labeled - so for this contest it would have to be Lent or Pascha.  I don't think I have anything for Assumption or Pentecost.  I think I have three years worth of Pan-Orthodox Lenten Vespers, as well as Pascha.  You can find me on FB by searching for esymonenko.

Otherwise, peruse the ones I have linked to on this page, and let me know which ones you think are the best.

Since this is "your" idea, I say we enter this contest as a team!  Cheesy

We will either win together, or lose together.

Not sure if it's possible. However I advice you to create an account on OrthPhoto.net (I cut all my ties with its owners last years so I hope it won't be viewed as advertising).

I understand....I already have an account with them (if I can remember my password).

I meant that I would enter the contest....but, I would be entering "for all of us".

...so, if I were to collect the prize, I would stand at the virtual podium and thank the kind members and posters at OCnet to whom I owe this great honor!  Wink

Here are some photos from Saturday's Vespers (Sunday of the Holy Cross) - my church.  (I got to decorate the Cross! - how honored am I?)

Flowers done, and waiting for Fr. Paul to take in to the Altar

Lying on the Altar Talbe

Lying to the right, is an icon I just bought and had Fr. Paul bless for me.

LOL!  Thanks, biro!  Definitely not a professional photographer.  Just a hobby of mine.

The church was soooooo pretty, it was hard to walk out of it.  I just wanted to linger there for hours.

...as it was, I closed it down!  Cheesy  The candles were put out, then the lights went off....and I was still lurking.  By the time I joined everyone in the hall....there was no more coffee left.   Grin

Visitation by our metropolitan on the 2nd Sunday of Great Lent.  Our altar server, Kenneth Kulmatycki, was ordained as a subdeacon before the Divine Liturgy.

This is Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Detroit.

Yes, that's Father Anthony.  Here was here for our Lenten mission, this past Saturday.  I love serving with Father.

The interior painting and fixing of the dome was completed this past week and the church looks just wonderful.  When I get a chance I'll post photos of the work that was done, along with what the interior looked like before.

Palm Sunday at my parish.

It was also the Sunday for our First Confession children.

He's up on his tippy toes...

The kids got to hold candles during the reading of the Gospel.

Holy Saturday.  We bless baskets after Divine Liturgy.  It is supposed to be for the elderly and those with young families, who will not be able to attend in the evening and in to early Sunday morning.  They are forbidden from eating from the baskets until after Midnight, and Christ is Risen.

I once again, gave the kids candles to hold during the reading of the Gospel.

The homemade butter lamb caught my eye....I didn't even notice the rings, until I was looking at the photos...do you see them?

You only posted it yesterday.  Folks weren't online on Sunday.  Give them some time.  Cheesy

I thought the photos were very nice.  I was able to view them.

So, did you take these photos this weekend?  If so, was there some particular event that everyone was out at the cemeteries?

I know we have St. Demetrios next Saturday, perhaps you are on new calendar?

Sad. I set it for "friends of my friends" to watch.

The parish has like 5 cemeteries. It would be impossible to serve all of them on one weekend[/quote]

They don't.  Smiley  But, I never know anymore.

I noticed a number of "half" buried crosses.  Is that a local tradition?

These are probably remnants of broken or rotten crosses.

Cemetery dates back to XVth century. Of course there is nothing such old left but one can assume some pieces may come from the XVIII one.

It's his portable version.  Otherwise, he's got a little broom-like sprinkler made of shaved wood, that he dips and douses with.

I especially like this one. The contrast between the simple blue tombstones and the rather ostentatious one is quite jolting.

Michal, really beautiful photos.

Well, at least that's what I've seen in some places in Serbia - that's the same cross that it's put before coffin during burial. There is a similar situation even on the grave of my grandmother. However, behind the cross there is also a tombstone.

I've noticed it too. That's one of the reasons I liked the pictures.

Here's my backyard.

..and these are from a week's ago Sobor of the UOCofUSA

Continuing with the theme of cemeteries and crosses:

...and continuing on with the Divine Liturgy at 7:30 a.m..  His Grace Bishop Daniel is celebrating the Liturgy.

Relocating the relics of St. Antony the Great and St. Barbara to their new home in St. Sophia's Seminary.

Awaiting Vespers that evening, at the Seminary Chapel.

....Vespers finished around 10 p.m.

I had the honor of witnessing the ordination of a new deacon.  I had never seen this before...and it was rather moving.

So, the deacon from the altar calls him forward three times.  Each time he prostrates and moves forward, until he reaches the altar.
(Sorry for the "fogginess" of some of these photos.  By this point, the entire place is filled with incense.)

Once inside the Altar, he is led by two priests around the Altar Table, stopping to kiss each of the 4 corners.

Once he been led around 3 times and bowed before the bishop, he is now ready for the next step.

I was moved to realize that the Gifts have at this point been miraculously changed, and he in fact, stands not just before the congregation, the priest and the bishops, but, before Christ Himself.

At this point the bishop lays his hands upon him and reads a number of prayers.

Once concluded, he now gives him a final lesson and some inspiring words.

...and now Bishop Daniel presents the new deacon to the faithful.

He vests him.

Then he presents the "tools of the trade".... as His Grace yells out Axios.  The Axios is then picked up in swirling chords by the faithful and the choir....echoing off the walls and sending chills of awe up and down one's spine.  It was really, really cool.

Axios!

Axios!

Axios!

I once read that the deacon does represent an angel, and therefore the presentation of the ripida is quite moving in its symbolism.

...and finally he presents to deacon.  Axios!

Whom, after a few words, Bishop Daniels sends in to the crowd to greet his family, as they are also a part of his new mission, and are in fact sacrificing their husband and father for the Church.

...and then he is escorted back in to the Altar to serve God.

...and the Liturgy continues with the Lord's Prayer.

I am assuming he is kneeling out of respect?  I don't know.  You'd have to ask a deacon why they do that.

I do understand your point.  It is valid, and I had the same doubts.  I try to do all things with the utmost respect for Christ.  I have even approached a number of clergy on this very topic, and was given the green light.

I was told that as long as I do not attach any ridicule or joke to the image, it is acceptable, as Christ showed himself to the people after His resurrection, was touched, conversed with, etc.

I've seen it plenty of times, but perhaps not every deacon is able to do it.

I don't know if the Byzantine rubrics are similar, but at deacon ordinations in our tradition, the subdeacon to be ordained kneels on his right knee for the whole service, whereas in every other ordination candidates kneel on both knees.  As it was described to me, this is because the deacon is always ready to serve and not just to pray, and also because he has a foot in both heaven (the service of the altar) and earth (ministry among the people).  ISTM that this custom is related to ours.

I know.  My point is that this particular posture is unique to the diaconate, and was probably more in use "back in the day", even if it is not as common nowadays outside of ordinations.  But again, I've seen it often here unless the deacon is somehow impeded.

RCs frequently kneel on one foot, but it's not reserved for deacons.

Ah, yes.  This church is rather tall and pointy.  Midway up, there's a choir loft around 3 of the walls.  It's from these balconies that I took the photos.  I kept running up and down and in and out and up and down and all around.

Blessed Feast Day!!!

So, explain the tradition....

They all make their own candles?

Are they standing in some particular order?  I see the rows on either side, but, then there's a bunch of folks up front without lighted candles.

When do they light their candles?

...and finally....don't they work or go to school on this day?  You've got young and old in attendance.  That's great, but, here....they'd be dinged for missing school, and work.

Yes, they make their own candles for Entrance. Candles used to be make at homes but know they are made jointly at the
vicarage. There are 12 candles that are carried by women that make the core part of the custom. I suppose there are more too carried by the others. From what I see on the pictures candles are lit for the first time after they are blessed right after the Liturgy. Then they are lit at major feasts, when people die and on similar occasions.

It is normal school day. I suppose the children just skipped it, more or less officially.
