I have an Armenian cross pendant with some text on the back and I'm curious what it is. I don't have a good camera to take a picture though. Is there anything commonly on Armenian crosses? I tried describing it by similar looking Latin and Greek letters but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't help.  |

Sometimes crosses that come from Armenia will have "Holy Etchmiadzin" on the back, written in Armenian letters. That is the name of the Cathedral where the Catholicos presides. Crosses like that are given out as souvenirs, etc.
If it is written down the back in Armenian letters, it may look something like:
Ս
Է
ջ
մ
ի
ա
ծ
ի
ն
Is that more or less what it looks like?

If you're not sure about it, ask your priest. I can't see how it could be a problem, but you never know.
I seem to recall one or two threads in which some EO's discussed wearing Old Believer crosses, and it didn't seem to be a problem for most of them, in spite of the fact that they are not in communion with the Old Believers.

Like, I would feel weird wearing a cross that said "Holy Rome" on it... There's no problem with either Holy Rome, Holy Etchmiadzin, or Holy Jerusalem, for that matter, with the Orthodox. Etchmiadzin and Rome were cities holy to Orthodoxy long before any schisms. They are full of holy relics which we venerate, and many Orthodox make pilgrimage there. |
