I was listening to the news earlier today and they had some "experts" giving advice on what to do if you win. The most sensible: consult financial and tax advisers before claiming the prize, keep your mouth shut about it until you do. Least sensible to me; keep working, since the lump sum is 'only" about $250M after taxes or $19M a year on the annuity. If I can't live on $19M/year I've got a problem.

The annuity is what 2.5% interest? If you take that then get maybe 5-20% on top of that annuity it might be best instead of getting a lump sum. But I don't trust what is it a 30 year payout period? I want the lump sum.
26 year annuity. about $19M/year on $500M

And you see with a 19 million annuity, I mean honestly I don't see myself even blowing that much.

I want to live very humbly when I win. I don't even want a mansion, just a small little house.

That's why it intrigued me that Suze Orman said whoever wins should keep working.

Only if you love what you do, I guess. Peronally for me I couldn't stand working.

I'd probably still work until all the details from my attorneys, financial and tax advisors are ironed out and I claim the ticket. Then I will quit.

Since I work in healthcare, as much as I love whta I do I'd quit. One of my dreams for retirement has been to form a group of other ritired nurses and other practitioners to do community health teaching. I could do that.

I kind of wish I had such a disposable income that I could easily blow 100-500 dollars worth of tickets. It's stupid, but there's people who do it. like the winner of the 345 million jackpot on the Powerball a few years back. Dude was already a millionaire but would spend thousand and thousands of dollars on tickets so of course he was going to win.

The probability of each ticket is the same, yes, but we're talking about the cumulative probability of one of your many tickets of winning.

Think of it this way. I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 10. If you can only guess once, you have a 1/10 chance of guessing my number. If you can guess twice, you don't have a 1/8 chance of guessing my number, you have a 2/10 chance of guessing my number, aka 1/5.

I'm not saying this out of some false humility or vanity or whatever, but I sincerely would just donate it it all if I won. To whom? I would have no idea. I'd love to end poverty.

But you know what? When you win that money, I wonder how much it changes a person.

I don't know if people are already doing this now, like giving up their life savings or selling their items just to get tickets, but could you honestly imagine if this lottery swells to a billion?

I mean think about how many people would put their own lives at risk just to get that kind of a prize.

Yeah, you'd be surprised. I know folks who work in low paying jobs like housekeeping and dietary who spend a couple of hundred bucks a week on lottery tickets. The other day at the grocery store i saw someone buy $100 of the scratchers at once. i knew a clerical person who took a credit card cash advance to buy tickets. wow.

If you were the only winner and purchased every single possible combination you would end up with a net lump before taxes of:

$462,000,000 - $175,711,536 = $286,288,464

However if you add taxes into the mix:

Federal Tax: $462,000,000 * 35% = $161,700,000
Social Security: $110,100 *4.6% (you get a credit for the ER portion of the tax) = $5,064.60
Medicare: $462,000,000 * 1.45% = $6,699,000
State Tax: (I'll use Illinois since it's easy): $462,000,000 * 5% = $23,100,000

So if you bought every ticket and lived in Illinois as a sole winner that would end up being:

$462,000,000 - $175,711,536 - $161,700,000 - $5,064.60 - $6,699,000 - $23,100,000 = $94,784,399.40

Of course that is assuming you live in Illinois. If you live in say New Jersey, it will be less.

Yeah screw Chris Singleton. People like him tick me off because this game is designed for the poor and middle class.

I honestly don't know what I'd do if I won. If I survived the initial shock without having a heart attack, I'd just put the ticket in a safe deposit box and continue with my normal routine for a few weeks so no one would suspect it was me. Then I'd find a great lawyer and financial adviser and do the whole anonymous claim thing and secret trust fund.

After that I'd quit my job, and probably instigate a nasty fight with my girlfriend to trigger a mutual breakup. Then I would legally change my name, get plastic surgery to completely alter my appearance, and start looking for a nice private island with over 2,000 acres in a remote corner of the world. I'd hire 7 ex Navy Seals for security, and start building a secret research silo beneath the island. I'd scour the earth for the best minds in genetic hybrid animal breeding and pay them handsomely for creating strange and wonderful creatures to inhabit and patrol my island. The pitbull-tiger would defend the land, and my komono dragon-alligators would secure the sea. Other creatures would be created purely for aesthetic reasons, and all would love me dearly.

Then I'd probably send an anonymous check to all my family members for 5 million and live out the remainder of my days in a drug fueled haze while expanding my little kingdom.

Yeah screw Chris Singleton. People like him piss me off because this game is designed for the poor and middle class.

The lottery has been amusingly referred to as a tax on people who are bad at math.

So basically it's not worth it.
Plus it wouldn't be physically possible. Unless you had a program set up to fill out the playslips for you it would take years to fill them out. Also, I heard someone from the VA lottery being interviewed and she claimed that evn nationwide there is no way to print that many tickets in one week.

I'm pretty sure banks would literally hire or fly in person to handle my accounts and probably try and sell me all sorts of wealth management services. I would milk this for every penny too. Having 500mil is awesome, but having that money and also having a pack of suits flying me all over the country, buying dinner and events and putting me up in swanky hotels for free just for the privelage or warehousing that cash...yeah that's awesome.

LMAO at a NYC resident. The difference between a no-tax state and a citizen in NYC is: $43,721,370.

Wow.

Thanks Maryland and Kansas. As if I needed anymore of a reason to hate Maryland more than I do now.
