Terry Pratchett: Back in Black. Equal parts documentary, tribute and biopic, it had both me and the mister, decades-old STP fans, a mess by the end.

I bet someone will put it up on YouTube soonish...

This documentary may be a bit too slow for some people, but it’s a fascinating study of the irreversible and unintended consequences of certain actions and ideas, especially when those actions and ideas are of a violent nature. A cautionary tale for would be rebels and revolutionaries, as well as for writers. Currently streaming on Netflix.

Civilisation by Kenneth Clark. Nice, but a bit boring at times.

I love the 100 Years of Beauty series. I find the makeovers fascinating, and the research behind the looks even more so. My favourite episode, however, is this one, where the stakes jump up from makeup to body art.

Watched "Secrets of the Giant Manta Ray" on Nat Geo today. For those who don't know, manta ray numbers are taking a serious hit because of fishing for traditional Chinese medicine (it's like the American buffalo killings, they cut their front filters off and discard the rest) but biologists can't do as much to protect them because they still don't know where the manta rays go to give birth. They managed to find an archipelago off West Papua with some babies, but I didn't hear about any of the follow.

At least Indonesia banned the trade of them. Hopefully it will do some good.

Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies and Cyber Attacks

Owners/users justifying themselves with lines like "people were going to cheat anyway" I expected, but I was honestly surprised by how people were saying with a straight face that the service was actually a good thing and helped families avoid pain/problems.

The other thing that caught my attention was the Christian youtube vlogger who said "This was brought to my wife's attention; she has forgiven me for this mistake that I made. I've sought forgiveness to God, and He's forgiven me. So I've been completely cleansed of this sin."* Well there you go, easy peasy! ::)

* The clip took all of 10 seconds, though I don't know if the jump cuts were in the original vid or that was the documentary condensing things

Rewatched two favorites this week:

Grey Gardens (a favorite of the Maysles Brothers)

and Awake, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp (I haven't been able to get to a singing in a few months because of weekend work schedules and it brought back some fond memories).

Empire of the Tsars (Netflix)

3 part British doc about the Romanovs. I don't know the subject material well enough to know how historically accurate it is. The host can be a bit cringy at times, but I guess verve is generally a good thing. At the very least it's enjoyable to see HD video of various places in Russia.
