The Syriac Orthodox Church of St. Matthew, in Baghdad was attached today by Iraqi extremists, who this morning carried out a series of attacks across the country to coincide with the ninth anniversary of the U.S. invasion - March 20, 2003.

Church sources in Iraq asking for anonymity for safety reasons, told AsiaNews, that the two people were killed in the attack, while five others were injured. AsiaNews sources in Iraq confirm "at least the 20 explosions" in different areas of the country, including the bombing of St. Matthew Syriac Orthodox Church in Baghdad.

Is the implication that this is somehow in retaliation for the US invasion nine years ago?  What did the Syriac Orthodox Christians have to do with that?  This is just an excuse to kill people and further persecute Christians.

Yeah that had me scratching my head as well. I suppose for fanatics even the slightest excuse is excuse enough.  Sad

Really sad.  So that's not strange that more and more Christians espace from Iraq, which was an Arab country with quite huge christian minority... Lord have mercy!

Indeed. Remember only a little while ago that they bombed Siadat an-Najat Syriac Catholic Church (killing 52 people) in "revenge" for some imagined persecution of converts to Islam (that never actually converted) at the hands of the Coptic Orthodox in Egypt...logic has never been a strong suit of Islam, and much less so of radical Islamists.

Lord have mercy on your suffering servants and believers in Iraq. Preserve them and turn their oppressors away in shame.

Here's an interview with a family that lived through the horror of the attack on Our Lady of Salvation Syriac Catholic Church; which dzheremi mentioned above. Truly, one of the saddest things I've ever watched in my life. Lord have mercy.
