Greetings! This is my first post. I want to read the early church fathers. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Any reasons? (Of course I mean, why do you think they are a good starting place.)

We cannot legislate morality by passing laws controlling firearms. The only evil we can combat lies within our hearts. We need stronger laws to protect the moral foundation of society against the evil of gay marriage.

I thought you might have rather specific reasons. Frankly, I think most would do well to read St. Paul over and over and over. Outside of that, I don't have enough experience nor any experience guiding others to have an informed opinion.

Well, Ignatius letters are close to the source also, the only other closer being Clemente and Didache (which isn't ECF material), I believe. I think he establishes very important points, like the role of the bishops, and their relationship with the laity. edit: btw here is an audio version of Ignatius' 7 letters http://www.archive.org/details/IgntPolycarp

This is where I got my copies of the early Church Fathers, it's a decent site and has an area where you can download a program that will bring up the PDF's for you to read. http://ecmarsh.com/fathers/index.html

I got started by listening to this series of podcasts. It required minimal effort to find out about some of the Fathers who piqued my interest. You may find it helpful.
