I visited the Greek parish in my city and served in the altar. i was asked to wear a cassock, which I thought was pretty cool. But is this common? The usual is a sticharion.

Yes, it is common in Greek practice for those serving to "vest" I'm exorassa (outer cassock). The garment itself subtly differs from the Russian equivalent. Sure someone else here can say more ...

In Greek churches, it is not unusual for the most senior altar server (or more than one, if there are, say, two lads of equal age and length of service) to wear a black cassock instead of a colored stikharion. They would be in their mid-to late-teens when given this honor.

It was actually an inner cassock. Well, actually a Roman cassock from a western church supplier.

I assume that was just because that was all that's available.

I would prefer the sticharion.

Some readers while serving as altar servers do not put sticharions on cassocks.

If I am remembering correctly, and I may well not be, the altar servers at my parish wear cassocks.

Those tonsured as readers in order to serve in the altar as acolytes often wear inner cassocks with a sticharion over the top. Psalts and readers who actually read, and therefore stay outside the altar during the service, only wear a black exorasson.

Where are you? St. Nicholas Cathedral (OCA) Washington,DC, has altar servers, as well as tonsured clergy, wear podryasniki (undercassocks) under their sticharia. I know this from personal experience, haveing worn a podryasnik while serving.

Cool! I didn't know that that was a local tradition there as well.
