I had a great uncle (Epifanie Craciun), a hieromonk at Cocosu Monastery close to Tulcea. He knew and was telling me tjhat in the great church at Constantinople , the priests and deacons serving when the Turks entered it, became as of stone, to this day in the position of prayer, slowly, imperceptibly moving their lips, you can see they are alive. H. At the entrance stands the soldier that was about to attack the church, his hand on his sword. He's slowly pulling the sword out of its sheath, now only its tip is still in the sheath. My uncle stealthily entered in, for everything is under guard took the Gospel off the deacon's hands, put a mark where it was open, put it under his arm, under  the mantle and ran in a more secluded place to read it, meaning to take it back once done reading. When he was about to take it from under his arm, the book wasn't there. He went back the same way, assuming he had lost it until he was back into the church. He saw the Gospel back into the deacon's hands, as he saw it first. The angel of that church had brought it back. This miracle happens on the lower level of the cathedral of Constantinople, the world doesn't know, the Turks won't allow it to be seen or heard. My uncle was telling me that once the Turk's sword will have come out of its sheath completely, the end will come.

This type of discourse is quite common among the Romanian "elders". Fr. Cleopa himself has said comparable things

Can you provide quotes?  I have read a few books by and about him, and I recall nothing strange.

"Father, will those that had oral sex ever be forgiven?"
"The sin of debauchery has thousands faces, one uglier than the other. Those that practice oral sex and live unnaturally with their wives, let them not be communed until death. Their mouth is defiled. Those changed their mouth into anus. The Holy Spirit is disgusted by them. The punishment for sexual perversions is that of Sodom and Gomora , that is fire and brimstone . Like all the debauched, they will be badly tormented in hell, standing with their feet in stinky water to their waist with snakes and roaches coming out of that water to bite their shameful parts, that's how they will be tormented forever (that's what was discovered to me in a vision, that they will be tormented thus, it's good that you should know it.)"

Quote
Gypsies are thieves and lazy."

I am not sure if I should feel offended by this.

I am sure that Archbishop Jan of Presov is offended by such clap-trap as his Diocese has a mission for Gypsy children in Medzilaborce.

I think that Augustin does us a service by printing these excerpts in that we need to know exactly what some revere as being authentic Orthodoxy as we may be confronted by such words by enemies of the Faith. We need to know of them and be prepared to rebut them. I am sure that Evangelical missionaries in Romania are well aware of them and use them against the True Faith. We have to move beyond the peasant mentality in all parts of the world.

Well, in a rather  long apophthegma the good elder re-counts how a lady, following his spiritual advice successfully caused the divorce of her beloved son from the Gypsy woman he had against her will married. She just couldn't bear it that her unique son should marry a Gypsy. Fr. Ilarion helped her in this noble endeavor.

Interesting, but I thought that blaspheming the Holy Spirit was the only unforgivable sin.

I do remember one excerpt from Elder Cleopa where he said it was ok to beat up Jehovah's Witnesses. His understanding of Catholicism was iffy as well when he was explaining the differences between the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. He touch on the regular stuff like the Pope, filioque, purgatory, etc. but then also claimed that Catholics still sell indulgences.

Two things:
So he helped breaking a marriage, a sacred mystery, because of a womans ethnic backround? Again, I have no doubt that he have probably lived a very pious life, but this just don't sounds right to me.

Secondly, What exactly is it, that so many eastern europeans have against gypsies? I once read a journal written by guy who had met a orthodox monk in Bulgaria who claimed that gypsies were criminals because of their genes.

You could ask the same of any number of groups across the planet - Indians and 'untouchables', White Americans and 'African Americans', Shia and Sunni....  I wish I knew the answer as the planet would be a better place without the 'against' attitudes.

It is quite sad. But it obviously wasn't a marriage God blessed, in his view that it, because it is unnatural to marry outside your ethnicity. Sometimes I wonder if my brother was right to go back to Catholicism.  Undecided

I've met some Bosnians who are very paranoid about the Roma, so it seems that discriminating against them is a common aspect of Eastern European culture (and Europe in general). I think the disdain for them is mainly because they are different. As in different traditions and cultural practices.

Racism exists everywhere - it is the fear of the 'different' which drives it. I don't think that one can blame Orthodoxy for the issues with the Roma - this is a big issue between the EU and the mostly Catholic Slovak Republic for example. The Orthodox of east Slovakia, on the other hand, have been out front with outreach to the Roma and the children's home is just one example of the Church's efforts.

I must tread lightly, but it's not just Eastern Europeans or Europeans that have problems with them.  Gypsies have a fairly unique culture, and one that views outsiders as targets for various criminal activity.  I'll spare you the details, but people (myself included) have had some very bad experiences with them. Overwhelmingly negative interactions with folk turn to distrust and animosity.

I've never had any bad experiences with Romanians. They are extremely friendly. I went to a Romanian church once where they insisted that I stay for lunch. They were very nice, even though they gave me head cheese, which was possibly the most horrifying thing that I've ever eaten. I told them I liked it though and they were very happy to be sharing their culture with an outsider and making me feel welcome.

Don't think this doesn't happen among Catholics.  My wife's Polish grandfather had to jump through hoops to marry his Italian wife and was never fully accepted by his in-laws.  I've met plenty of Irish (both "off the boat" and "-Americans") who would be apoplectic at their children marrying anything other than fellow Irish, with the possible exception made for Scots.

Don't worry, Iam fully aware that romas have a long history of criminal behavior (I am still mostly danish, so I'm having no trouble admitting it  Wink)
Sometimes it just saddens me how some people treats them.

A woman, going to surgery, came to Fr. Ilarion for a blessing:
"Bless me Father, I'll have surgery."
"What surgery/"
"Uterus complications they'll have to take everything out of me."
"This is punishment for all of your abortions. The illnesses of the century are: breast cancer for those women (sexually) refusing their husbands and genital cancer for those that had abortions."

"Father, some people have a reddish-purble rash on their faces and bodies, what's their cause?"
" That rash is found on those persons conceived on forbidden days, during the menstruation  period, during those 8 days when a women is forbidden  to sleep with her husband. If this custom is not observed, the blood that doesn't flow out of her body, is going to be on the child thus conceived . Those spots are larger or smaller, depending on the day their union took place. If it happened at the end of the cycle, then the spots are smaller, if it happened at the start they are large and ugly. These spots will never disappear. "

"Father, I unburied a dead man, and although 7 years had passed, he wasn't decayed, why?"
"Let it be known unto you that all that were cursed do not decompose, those that smoked when you unburry them their bodies are covered in a smoke like the soot  on the chimney, and in the grave of a sorcerer you'll find ashes. The devil helps them when alive to do evil by their sorcery but once they die he himself (ie the devil) burns their bodies so that they do not come to the Last Judgement. Some dead, only have a hand or a foot undecayed. Those are the sons that hit their parents, so those body parts won't decompose as a sign of their sin."

I just love the utter lack of dillemas on Fr. Ilarion's part. Everything is cause> effect. I actually like him.

You are beginning to sound like my science teacher   Smiley

I actually want to ask you a question. Do you happen to know if it's posible to find any quotes from Elder Proclus in english?

I really like this video, but I can't find anything about him.

Augustin, I hope you´re not taking any of this personally. i have no dout that the elder have probably lived a very pious life and you are very welcome to post more of Father ioans saying.

I do doubt that the elder lived a pious life.  Perhaps I am committing sin in what I am about to say, but I am going to say it anyways.  There are two types of "pious life."  The one where a person engages in all of the rituals of the Church, where they do all the outward things they are supposed to.  I don't frankly care if the elder lived that type of "pious life" or not.  Then there is the truly pious life, the one where a person unites themselves completely and totally to God.  God is love.  The highest spiritual law - the only law a Christian must follow - is that of law.  If the passages Augustin has posted are anything like representative of this priest, I have no difficulty in saying he did not live a truly pious life.  If you are totally united to Love, then you will not be filled with anger, hate, and suspicion which is what I see in the quotes of this priest.  I have some ideas about who such a person might really be united to...

Interesting, but I thought that blaspheming the Holy Spirit was the only unforgivable sin.

This quote of this priest is heresy.

Perhaps Christ was wrong when He said the blind man wasn't blind because of his or his parents' sins?
